The IEC 62606 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is designed for arc fault detection devices for household and similar uses in alternating current circuits. Arc fault detection devices are manufactured for the following purposes:

This international standard provides requirements and test procedures for devices to be installed by qualified persons in households and similar uses to reduce the risk of the device igniting an electrical fire.
Residual current devices detect leakage current and arc to ground by monitoring currents in an electrical installation and reduce the risk of fire. However, residual current devices, such as fuses or circuit breakers, do not completely eliminate the risk of electrical fire due to series or parallel arcing between live conductors. During a series arc fault, there is no leakage to earth and therefore residual current devices cannot detect this fault. Also, the impedance of the series arc fault lowers the load current which will keep the current below the trip threshold of the circuit breaker and fuse. In case of a parallel arc between the phase and neutral conductor, the current is limited only by the impedance of the installation.
Existing experience and knowledge has confirmed that an earth fault current caused by an arc fault that ignites a fire contains a much higher value of voltage and current. It is also accepted that the risk of fire in an electrical installation may also be the result of an overvoltage originating from a neutral circuit in a three-phase installation.
The IEC 62606 standard covers devices designed to be installed in a distribution switchboard at the source of one or more final circuits of a fixed installation.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for general requirements for arc fault detection devices within the scope of the IEC 62606 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
