Requirements for IPC J-STD-005A Solder Pastes

The IPC J-STD-005A standard published by the Printed Circuits Institute (IPC) describes general requirements for the characterization and testing of solder pastes used to make high quality electronic interconnects. This standard is a material quality control standard and is not intended to be directly related to the performance of the material in the assembly process. The standard contains a list of requirements and options for flux users that they must consider when procuring flux.

Requirements for IPC J-STD-005A Solder Pastes

This standard defines the properties of solder paste through specification of properties and specification of test methods and inspection criteria. The materials include solder powder and flux blended to produce flux. Soldering powders are classified according to the shape of the particles and the size distribution of the particles.

It is not the purpose of this standard to exclude particle sizes or distributions that are not specifically listed. Flow characteristics of solder paste, including classification and testing, are defined in standard J-STD-004.

Solder paste requirements are generally defined in the IPC J-STD-005A standard. In practice, where more stringent requirements are required, additional requirements are as agreed between the user and the supplier. Users may agree to perform tests outside of this standard to determine the acceptability of the solder paste for certain processes.

Solder paste is one of the most important materials used in modem electronics manufacturing. In addition to the task of providing enough solder material to create a reliable solder joint, the following properties are sought in the solder paste:

  • The solder paste must maintain error-free printability before melting.
  • It must retain its stickiness to hold the components in place.
  • It must have oxidation protection during brazing and must protect oxidation.

Although superior wetting properties are a crucial prerequisite for flawless assemblies, published international standards do not provide transparent and adequate guidelines on how to characterize the wetting performance of a solder paste. Therefore, companies that manufacture materials or perform electronic assembly must implement specific testing methods to determine the performance of solder paste for quality purposes.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for the requirements for solder pastes, within the scope of the IPC J-STD-005A standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
