D45 1727 Interior Lining Materials and Passenger Compartment Parts - Determining Fogging Properties

Developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, Europe's second-largest car manufacturer, the D45 1727 standard defines a test method for determining the fogging properties of interior trim materials and passenger compartment parts in the automotive industry.

The fogging tester used in these tests is designed to test the fogging of leather and fabric under specified ambient conditions, suitable for the evaluation of the fogging property of volatile components of interior coating materials used in high temperature automobiles and aircraft. This device is also used to test the fogging property of car xenon lamps.

The main frame of the tester contains a water chamber that reaches high temperature and is completely filled with ethylene glycol. During testing, skin samples are placed in six standard glass containers filled with high-temperature liquid, and stainless steel containers are placed over each glass. Due to the constant water flow distribution, the temperature is constantly kept at 20 degrees and adjusted by a device attached to the main frame. This controlled ambient condition creates a fog layer on the surface of the samples. Then, the fogging properties of the materials are determined based on the gravimetric analysis method or the refraction method.

High surface and interior temperatures cause polymers, textiles and natural materials used in automotive interiors to expel volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds faster. These then condense on the cooler surface of the windshield, potentially creating a vision and safety issue for the driver.

The fogging test is a method used to reproduce automotive interior gas output in a timely, measurable and reproducible manner. The purpose of this test is to assist material manufacturers in identifying and developing products that exceed low volatile organic compounds.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services for the determination of fogging properties of interior lining materials and passenger compartment parts within the scope of D45 1727 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
