EN 1469 Natural Stone Products - Cladding Boards - Requirements

The European standard "EN 1469 Natural stone products - Cladding boards - Requirements" describes the requirements for natural stone boards made for use as cladding for internal and external wall and ceiling cladding. This standard does not cover aggregates and artificially agglomerated stone materials and assembly. Furthermore, this standard does not cover roofing boards used as external cladding and boards and stone products for coffered roofing. This standard does not take into account fixing by means of mortars and adhesives.

EN 1469 Natural Stone Products - Cladding Boards - Requirements

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply in addition to the terms and definitions given in EN 12670:

  • Cladding board is a cut sheet to be used as cladding for interior and exterior walls. It can be fixed or hung at any angle.
  • The dimensions of the cladding boards, length, width and thickness are the dimensions of the cladding board for exterior and interior use.
  • The lower expected value corresponds to the 75th percentile of the lognormal distribution for a 5 percent confidence level.
  • The high expected value corresponds to the 75th percentile of the lognormal distribution for a 95 percent confidence level.

The geometrical properties of natural stones for cladding purposes are determined as follows:

  • All measurements must be made in accordance with the EN 13373 standard and all individual unit values measured must be within the required tolerances.
  • The thickness shall be measured in accordance with EN 13373 and the measured values shall not deviate from the nominal thickness by more than the value given in the table in the standard. Stricter deviations may be declared by the manufacturer. This is particularly important if the edges of the slabs will be visible after installation. Stricter tolerances may be required if the slab is to be fixed with adhesive or a thin mortar bed. The required thickness of the slabs results from a structural analysis or similar procedure which takes into account the technical and physical properties of the stone and the intended application. For naturally cleft surfaces, the values in the table are not valid and the deviations in thickness are determined by the manufacturer.
  • The deviation from the flatness of the surface (excluding natural cleft surfaces) when measured according to EN 13373 must not exceed 0,2 percent of the board length and 3 mm. For natural cleft surfaces, the flatness tolerance must be declared by the manufacturer.
  • Length, width and squareness must not deviate from the nominal dimensions by more than the tolerances given in the table. Measurements must be made in accordance with EN 13373. Stricter deviations may be declared by the manufacturer. For natural splits or torn edges, the values in the table do not apply and the tolerances for length, width and squareness are determined by the manufacturer.
  • The permissible deviation at any point shall be as stated in the table. Each sheet angle shall conform to the agreed geometry. Special or irregular shaped parts shall be checked for conformity to the required shape using a suitable template, the permissible deviation at any point shall be as stated in the table. Stricter deviations may be declared by the manufacturer. This is particularly important when the edges of the sheets are visible.
  • The specified position, depth and diameter of the dowel holes shall be: position measured along the length or width of the board plus/minus 2 mm, position measured across the thickness plus/minus 1 mm (measured from the exposed surface), depth plus 3 mm minus 1 mm, diameter plus 1 mm minus 0,5 mm. Stricter deviations may be declared by the manufacturer. For other fixing systems (e.g. sockets), specific deviations are declared by the manufacturer.
  • The commercial dimensions of the cladding sheets shall be based on the area of the smallest possible enclosed rectangle measured in square metres with accuracy to two decimal places. For small units, it may be necessary to agree on a minimum size, for example 0,25 m2. Surface coating General surface coatings shall be applied uniformly to the edges of the cladding sheet. Surface treatment of some types of stone may typically involve the use of patches, fillers or other similar products for natural holes, faults or cracks. This shall be considered as part of normal operation. In such cases, the type of treatment and the type and nature of additional materials shall be declared. Surfaces after cladding shall have a regular appearance as a function of the cladding process and shall be machined to meet the specified coating (e.g. by reference to samples) on all exposed surfaces. Standard EN 12670 applies for the definition of surface coatings.

When products are subjected to a process during manufacture that alters the properties of the stone (for example, chemical or physical treatment, patching or filling or other similar products for natural holes, faults or cracks), the use of that process must be specified and changes in physical and chemical properties must be accounted for. In addition, samples for testing must be representative of any processes to which the product and stone have been subjected.

Our organization, which has been trying to support businesses from every sector with its wide range of testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies for years, has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. In this context, testing services in accordance with the "EN 1469 Natural stone products - Cladding boards - Requirements" standard are also provided to businesses.
