D45 1817 Organic Materials and Coatings - Contamination and Cleaning Behavior

The D45 1817 standard, developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe, defines a test method for determining the contamination and cleaning behavior of organic materials and coatings used in the automotive industry.

D45 1817 Organic Materials and Coatings - Contamination and Cleaning Behavior

Organic coatings are protective layers produced from organic high polymer materials that protect equipment against corrosion by aqueous and non-aqueous corrosion environments, soil and atmosphere, and are intended to prevent adhesion of solid and pasty materials. In corrosion protection, organic coatings, unlike paints, have greater layer thicknesses and the reaction is obtained from resin fillers, thermoplastic films, natural and synthetic rubber sheets, as well as powders and dispersions. The protective layer prevents the corrosive medium from reaching the base material and has sufficient durability in case of chemical, thermal and mechanical stress. This is achieved by good adhesion with suitable adhesives to clean surfaces and, if necessary, to foil and rubber sheets. Loose liners adhered to the support material only at points have a short protection time due to unhindered diffusion.

Organic coatings are used on all possible surfaces to preserve appearance as well as design . When applied to metals, corrosion protection becomes their most important technical feature. The primary role of a coating is to create a physical barrier, but thickness doesn't always mean it's better. Effective corrosion protection through an organic coating requires the following:

  • Proper preparation of the substrate surface
  • Professional formulation of treatment chemicals and coating agents
  • Appropriate machining processes
  • Adaptation to the respective use and to different external conditions

In short, organic coatings are the primary method of protecting metals from corrosion. Their purpose ranges from the temporary protection of surfaces during storage, transportation and further processing to the function of protective linings, imparting some additional properties such as surface structure, biostatic properties and electrical conductivity.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services to determine the contamination and cleaning behavior of organic materials and coatings within the scope of the D45 1817 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
