ANSI A118 Material Properties

ANSI A118 Material Properties

The ANSI A118 standard, published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) , is a voluntary standard that defines ceramic tile flooring as well as test methods and physical properties for ceramic tile flooring materials. This standard is intended to serve as a guide for the public, manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, architects, tile contractors, testing laboratories, and other businesses and professionals in the tile industry. Essentially, the existence of this standard does not prevent anyone, including those who adopt it, from producing, marketing, or using products, processes, or procedures that do not conform to this standard.

ANSI A118 Material Properties

The ANSI A118 standard consists of the following sections under the main title of "Material properties":

  • A118.1 American national standard specifications for dry-setting cement mortar
  • A118.3 American national standard specifications for chemical resistant, water cleanable tile setting
  • A118.4 American national standard specifications for modified dry-set cement mortar
  • A118.5 American national standard specifications for chemical resistant furan grouts and joints for tile installation
  • A118.6 American national standard specifications for standard cement mortars for tile installation
  • A118.7 American national standard specifications for high-performance cement mortars for tile installation
  • A118.8 American National Standard Specifications for Modified Epoxy Emulsion Mortar/Grout
  • A118.9 American national standard specifications for test methods and specifications for cementitious support units
  • A118.10 American national standard specifications for carrier, bonded, waterproof membranes for fine-tuned ceramic tile and dimensional stone installation
  • American national standard specifications for A118.11 EGP (exterior adhesive plywood) modified dry-set mortar
  • A118.12 American national standard specifications for crack isolation membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimension stone installation
  • A118.13 American national standard specifications for bonded sound reduction membranes for thin-set ceramic tile installation
  • A118.15 American national standard specifications for improved modified dry set cement mortar

For the purposes of this standard,

  • For dry-set Portland cement mortar, dry-set mortar according to ANSI A118.1 standard should be specified. Specialty mortars covered by this standard include the following types: fast-setting dry-setting mortar and non-sagging dry-setting mortar. If a special mortar is required, the dry setting mortar should be specified in accordance with ANSI A118.1 and the type of special mortar to be used.
  • Latex-Portland cement mortar should be specified in accordance with ANSI A118.4 standard.
  • EGP (external glued plywood) latex-Portland cement mortar should be specified in accordance with ANSI A118.11 standard.
  • Chemical resistant, water-cleanable tile hardening and grouting epoxy or epoxy adhesive according to ANSI A118.3 standard should be specified.
  • According to ANSI A118.5 standard, chemical resistant furan mortars should be specified.

Our organization also provides testing services for material properties within the scope of ANSI A118 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
