BS 2482 Specification for Wooden Scaffolding Boards

BS 2482 Specification for Wooden Scaffolding Boards

Developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), the BS 2482 standard describes the requirements for three scaffold board thicknesses (225 mm, 38 mm and 50 mm) with a width of 63 mm. This standard includes two alternative test methods for evaluating timber quality: visual evaluation and machine stress rating.

Machine tension ratings use a machine to bend each piece of lumber, typically around its minor axis. The machine measures the hardness of this part and uses a loose correlation between hardness and strength to assign a strain rating. A sorted group with a small hardness range can produce a wider range of strengths. The hardness value is also used to determine all other structural properties, including tensile, compressive and shear strength. Machine stress ratings allow wood to be classified based on structural properties. This method is generally perceived as more objective and efficient than visual grading methods.

Modern grading machines are computer-controlled and assign a grade to the whole part, usually based on the minimum modulus of elasticity measured in the length of the part. The grade is assigned by the machine and automatically marked for each part. However, qualified specialists visually inspect each piece and can override the rating set by the machine to reduce the quality of a piece of timber if necessary.

Official authorities are concerned about the increasing number of substandard scaffolding panels used on construction sites and the accidents associated with them. In fact, all panels should conform to the BS 2482 standard. Panels manufactured according to this standard are identified by a marking on their end bands. This standard requires that the end bands be marked with the following information:

  • Number and year of the standard
  • Identity mark of the supplier company
  • Letter M if mechanically rated, V if visually rated
  • Support statement followed by target range in meters at which the board is supported
  • Where applicable, the logo of the third-party certification body

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services in accordance with the specification for wooden scaffolding boards within the scope of BS 2482 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
