The ASTM D2509-20 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes a test method for determining the load-carrying capacity of lubricating greases using a Timken extreme pressure testing machine. This test method is widely used for specification purposes and to differentiate greases with low, medium, or high levels of extreme pressure properties.

Selecting an appropriate lubricant for a particular mechanism requires examining the relationship between various design, operation, and lubricant properties. One of the most important stages of the extreme pressure and lubricant problem is the development of laboratory instruments and test methods for the characterization of a lubricant, which are important measures of service performance.
Since the primary requirement for an extreme pressure lubricant is lubrication under high load, the first important point is to investigate the load carrying capacity.
The Timken method is a standardized measurement of the possible performance of extreme pressure additives in lubricating grease or oil. Units of measurement are pound-force or kilogram-force. This measurement is performed using a special testing machine and standard block and ring test specimens.
The test machine is based on a machine manufactured by the Timken company from 1935 to 1972. The Timken method is now an industry accepted standard test method for reproducibly comparing the extreme pressure resistance of greases and oils.
The testing machine consists of a standard bearing seat mounted on a conical arbor that rotates at high speed. The seat is contacted with a square steel test block under a constant load. The contact area is filled with the tested lubricant or grease.
Timken test methods are based on ASTM D2509 for greases and ASTM D2782 for oils.
Timken loads are listed in the grease and oil specification tables and are part of many specifications. It was once generally assumed that the size of the lubricant and the film strength were directly related. Today, the main purpose of testing is to determine if additives are present and working.
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides standard testing services for the measurement of the load carrying capacity of lubricating grease within the scope of ASTM D2509-20 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
