EN 998-1 Masonry Mortar - Properties - Coarse and Fine Plaster Mortar

The EN 998-1 standard, which is a European standard, provides test methods for rough and fine plaster mortar within the scope of the specification for masonry mortar.

EN 998-1 Masonry Mortar - Properties - Coarse and Fine Plaster Mortar

This standard applies to factory-made plaster mortars based on inorganic binders for external and internal (plaster) use in walls, ceilings, columns and partitions and covers definitions and final performance requirements.

The EN 998-1 standard evaluates and verifies the stability of the performance of the product. It also includes the marking requirement for products covered by this standard. However, it does not cover mortars where the calcium sulfate binder is the main active binder.

This type of binder is used as an additional binder with air lime. If air lime is the main active binder component, plaster mortar falls within the scope of this standard. If the calcium sulfate binder is the main active binder component, the mortar is within the scope of the EN 13279 standard (EN 13279 Building and plaster plasters).

Other products not covered by this standard are: special fire resistant and acoustic mortars, leveling or smoothing materials, paints, coatings, thin-layer organic plasters and mortars for structural repair and surface treatment of building elements such as prefabricated units such as gypsum boards.

The product features are regulated under the following headings in the EN 998-1 standard:

1. General

  • Features of fresh mortar
  • Machinable life
  • air content

2. Properties of hardened mortar

  • General
  • Durability
  • Reaction to fire
  • Dangerous materials

3. Mixing the mortar in place

On the other hand, the evaluation and verification of constancy of performance is regulated under the following headings in this standard:

1. General

2. Product type determination

  • General
  • Sampling
  • Reference test
  • Repetition of product type determination
  • Register
  • Application of test methods

3. Factory production control

  • General
  • Process control
  • Finished product suitability
  • statistical techniques
  • Traceability - Marking of products and stock control
  • Incompatible products
