PSA D11 1158 Adhesives - Straight Angle Peel

PSA D11 1158 Adhesives - Straight Angle Peel

The standard “PSA D11 1158 Adhesives - Straight angle peel”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, describes a procedure for characterizing the bond that exists between two flexible supports, regardless of the process used. Transfer from one of the two supports is valid for double-sided or pre-laid adhesives.

PSA D11 1158 Adhesives - Straight Angle Peel

In this test method, in principle, the bond of two flexible materials is characterized by measuring the average force required to separate these two materials by straight angle peeling (180 degrees).

The equipment used in these tests includes:

  • Pulling machine. This machine should have the following features:
    • It must be equipped with adequate jaws.
    • The speed of the moving jaws should be adjustable to 100 mm/min plus/minus 10 mm/min.
    • The minimum capacity should be 100 N.
  • Test supports. It can be protection paper, textile, rubber or plastic coated textile, rubber sheet, plastic sheet, PVC film, polyester film, double-sided adhesive tape and the like. For tensile elongated supports or double-sided adhesives, an aluminum foil, polyester film or other support that does not elongate during the peel test is placed.
  • Pressurization device for static pressure. It is a sheet cut from a semi-flexible foam material such as sponge rubber, expanded polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane foam, with a length of 190 mm and a width of the test specimen of uniform thickness between 3 mm and 6 mm, with a load-carrying capacity P50 of approximately 200 N/dm2. This device allows the initial pressure recommended by the supplier to be applied to the test specimen. When applying pressure by a roller pass, a pressure of 0,02 MPa or any other pressure specified in normative documents is applied by passing the roller (for double-sided adhesive).
  • The conditioned room has a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent.

Test samples should be representative of the size to be characterized. To ensure this representation, it is necessary to find the basic characteristics of the population under study. Selection criteria for test samples should be stated in the test report in accordance with the PSA A10 0156 standard. In case of doubt about sampling, PSA should be contacted for the rules to be followed.

When preparing test samples, at least three test samples are selected for each test condition in the conditioned room, following the following principles:

  • The size of the test samples should be 250 mm plus/minus 1 mm x 25 mm plus/minus 1 mm.
  • If necessary, remove the protective layer of the adhesive.
  • The adhesive is fixed to the flexible backing.

Then pressure is applied:

  • After placing a foam plate between the surface of the test sample and the pressurizing device to ensure even distribution of pressure, the pressure and time recommended by the supplier are applied.
  • Using a roller, apply the recommended pressure for double-sided adhesives.
  • A plastic or felt knife is used for labels and decorative films.

During the conditioning process of the sample, the test samples are placed in the conditioned chamber for 24 hours plus/minus 2 hours, unless there is a special provision. Finally, they are subjected to the aging prescribed in the normative standards.

The tests are carried out in a conditioned room. The tensile machine is set to the appropriate sensitivity. The test specimen is placed in the jaws of the tensile machine. Peeling is carried out over a length of 75 mm, corresponding to a displacement between the jaws of 75 mm plus/minus 150 mm = 75 mm. The load-displacement curve of the moving jaw is recorded. For adhesive tests, the additional fracture pattern is noted. The test specimens are placed in natural ageing.

For each test specimen, the average peel force in Newtons is determined over a length of 25 mm after eliminating the part of the load-displacement curve corresponding to the first 50 mm of peeled part:

  • By attempting to graphically balance the projecting and re-entering surfaces on either side of a parallel to the displacement axis, the intersection of this parallel with the load axis allows the average value of the peel force to be obtained.
  • Or after straightening the curve.

The values determined in this way on three test specimens are averaged. The results are given as the average peel stress expressed in Newtons per centimeter width of the product. Note the fracture pattern obtained.
