The standard “SMTC 9 950 001 Fuel system design specification - General functional specification” developed by SAIC ENGINE Technical Center (SMTC) provides a base specification that includes all common fuel system component and subsystem requirements. This standard is used in conjunction with individual component functional specifications that are specific and unique to the component being evaluated.

This standard applies to all fuel system components fitted to passenger cars, commercial derivatives, 4x4 off-road vehicles or special commercial vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, designed for all market regions.
The design process must be carried out in accordance with the SMTC 9 950 001 standard.
The component or subsystem must have an intended product life of 10 years based on current vehicle usage data. This translates into the following life time mileage and hour requirements:
Environmental design parameters for components or subsystems that can reliably meet the functional requirements of the product throughout its intended life include:
The component or subsystem design should take into account the recovery and recycling capability of the end-of-life vehicle. Accordingly, all component materials must comply with the standard “SMTC 5 500 001 Automotive Prohibited/Restricted Hazardous Substances for Parts and Materials”. The plastic, rubber and thermoplastic elastomeric materials used in the fuel system must also comply with the standard “SMTC 5 500 003 Material identification and marking of automotive plastic, rubber and thermoplastic elastomeric parts”. Recoverable and recyclable packaging must be used when processing fuel system products.
The dry weight of the component or subassembly is determined for the application and recorded in grams on the component drawing. The weight tolerance should conform to the nominal tolerance limit in the international material data system. When considering the weight optimization of a design, the following should be considered:
The component or subassembly shall exhibit state-of-the-art safety features. The design shall minimize the risk of leakage. This shall be through robust design. Wherever applicable, the component or assembly shall be designed to be fail-safe in terms of its operation and potential failure modes.
The component or subsystem must comply with all current fuel system regulations and all known future requirements that may apply for the life of the vehicle.
Critical dimensions and parameters are agreed upon between SMTC and the supplier. These dimensions are those that are important to ensure fit, packaging or functionality for the component assembly and must be specified and referenced on the component drawing or associated quality documentation.
There shall be no detrimental functional effects to the component when the fuel system is installed in a vehicle and subjected to altitude changes in the range of minus 200m to 5200m. Additionally, there shall be no physical damage to the component when carried on a commercial aircraft, either as a separate assembly or installed in a vehicle.
The component or subassembly should not contain any material that will be significantly affected by prolonged exposure to water that may be trapped on the surface of the component or between components or component layers.
All components and materials within the assembly must be designed to be free from all potential electrolytic action. No significant deterioration in the functional or leakage integrity of the component should be encountered.
All components and materials within the assembly should be designed so that, where practical, there is no significant fuel absorption and the component must maintain functional and leak integrity in all respects.
All sealing surfaces must be clean and free from surface defects including holes, blemishes, dents, gouges, burrs and offset molding lines. All sealing surfaces must be equal to or better than 0,8 μm, and machining marks or patterns must have a circular format. Flat sealing surfaces must remain flat within a tolerance of 0,2 mm.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “SMTC 9 950 001 Fuel system design specification - General functional specification” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
