ASTM D5706-16 Standard Test Method for Determining the Extreme Pressure Properties of Lubricating Greases Using a High Frequency, Linear Oscillation (SRV) Testing Machine

The ASTM D5706-16 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), provides a test method for determining the extreme pressure properties of lubricating greases under high frequency linear oscillating motion using the SRV linear oscillation testing machine. This test method is also used to evaluate the extreme pressure properties of the lubricating fluid.

ASTM D5706-16 Standard Test Method for Determining the Extreme Pressure Properties of Lubricating Greases Using a High Frequency, Linear Oscillation (SRV) Testing Machine

This laboratory test method is used to quickly determine the extreme pressure properties of lubricating greases at selected temperatures specified for use in applications where high Hertz point contact and high speed vibration or start/stop motions are present. This test method has found wide application in qualified lubricating greases used in the constant speed couplings of front wheel drive automobiles. Users of this test method must determine whether the results relate to field performance or other applications.

The SRV linear oscillation testing machine is a multifunctional tribometer with modular design. A tribometer is an instrument that measures properties such as the coefficient of friction, friction force, and wear volume between two surfaces in contact. This instrument was originally designed mainly for mechanical-dynamic testing under mixed friction conditions.

The test method defined in ASTM D5706-16 is for determining the load bearing properties of lubricating greases. With this test method, the following two issues are evaluated:

  • Load-wear index by means of a four-ball overpressure tester
  • Source point.

Used for specification purposes, this method distinguishes between lubricating greases with low, medium and high extreme pressure characteristics. Results are not necessarily related to results from the service. Lubricating greases that have as fluid components a silicone, halogenated silicone or a mixture of silicone fluid and petroleum oil are not suitable for this test method.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, has been able to test the extreme pressure of lubricating greases by using a high frequency linear oscillation (SRV) test machine within the scope of ASTM D5706-16 standard. It also provides standard testing services to determine its properties.
