EN 1087-1 Particle Boards - Determination of Moisture Resistance - Part 1: Boiling Test

EN 1087-1, a European standard , defines a test method for evaluating the bonding quality of particleboard intended for use in humid conditions, in accordance with the second option of EN 312-5 and EN 312-7 standards.

EN 1087-1 Particle Boards - Determination of Moisture Resistance - Part 1: Boiling Test

Changes in particleboard properties due to changes in moisture content are detected to avoid potential problems with linear expansion and thickness swelling, as well as loss of load carrying capacity and stiffness. If a material is used as structural members exposed to adverse humidity, the relationship of its properties to humidity is particularly important. While performing these tests, particle boards are primarily conditioned in humidity exposures between oven dryness and 90 percent relative humidity. Oven drying reduces the load bearing capacity and stiffness properties of most particle boards. The biggest exception to this decrease is resistance to pressure. Bringing the samples to equilibrium moisture content at 80 and 90 percent relative humidity affects the load carrying capacity and hardness.

The effect of changes in moisture content is an important factor to consider in translating the fundamental engineering properties of particle board into design stresses for efficient structural application, especially in the presence of external exposure.

There is a relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and the physical and mechanical properties of the particle board at different relative humidity exposures.

Particleboards are generally classified as:

  • General purpose sheets for use in dry conditions
  • Plates for interior fittings (including furniture) for use in dry conditions
  • Non-bearing sheets for use in humid conditions
  • Carrier plates for use in dry conditions
  • Carrier plates for use in humid conditions
  • Heavy load bearing plates for use in dry conditions
  • Heavy load bearing plates for use in humid conditions

For all these particleboard types, chipboards must comply with the general requirements described in the standard when shipped to the production facility. Performance characteristics are described in the EN 12871 standard for certain uses of particle boards.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides boiling test services for the determination of moisture resistance of particle boards within the scope of EN 1087-1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
