In the IPC-4203B standard published by the Printed Circuits Institute (IPC), the classification system of dielectric films coated with adhesive on one or both sides to be used as cover material and/or binder for flexible printed circuits and adhesive films with or without support used in the production of flexible printed circuits, quality and quality eligibility conditions are explained.
This standard does not cover inflexible adhesives designed for use in rigid sheet areas of rigid flexible structures within the scope of the IPC-4101 standard. Materials such as liquid applied coatings fall within the scope of the IPC-SM-840 standard and are outside of this standard.
The IPC-4203B standard has replaced both the IPC-FC-232C and IPC-FC-233A standards, and its requirements meet and even exceed the Class 3 requirements of those standards. Class 3 compliance also meets, and even exceeds, compliance with Classes 1 and 2. The IPC-4203B standard no longer uses the three-class system.
Non-specific identification according to the classification system described in this standard is intended for use by designers in master drawings to determine material selections. At the end of this standard is a set of material specification sheets identified by specification sheet numbers. Each page summarizes engineering and performance data for a flexible cover sheet and bonding film, showing the base material type, adhesive type, and reinforcement method.

The specific identification should be in the form shown in the example below and is intended for manufacturers to use in material purchase orders. The specific description should not be used by designers in master drawings to indicate material selections. Master drawings should show the material design in non-specific nomenclature, supplemented by notes with material specification details as defined by custom nomenclature. This description is normally long and does not fit in most computer cataloging areas.
