ISO 1924-2 Paper and Board - Determination of Tensile Properties - Part 2: Constant Elongation Rate Method (20 mm/min)
The ISO 1924-2 standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) defines a test method for determining the tensile strength, strain at break and tensile energy absorption of paper and board. A test machine operating at a constant elongation rate (20 mm/min) is used when performing this test. This standard also contains equations for calculating the stress index, the tensile energy absorption index, and the modulus of elasticity. The test performed in accordance with this standard always includes the measurement of tensile strength.

This standard applies to all paper and board, including papers with high stress at break, if the results are within the capability of the testing machine. It also applies to the components of the corrugated board, but not to the corrugated board itself.
For the purposes of the ISO 1924-2 standard,
- The expression tensile strength expresses the maximum tensile force per unit width that paper and board will withstand before breaking under the conditions defined in this standard.
- The expression tensile index expresses the tensile strength in grams.
- The expression elongation refers to the increase in the length of a test piece.
- The expression tension expresses the ratio of the elongation of a test piece to the initial test length. The strain is expressed as a percentage of the initial test length. The initial test length of the test piece is the same as the first interval between the clamping lines.
- The expression strain at break refers to the ratio of the elongation at the time of tearing a test paper to the initial test length when extended under conditions defined in the standard test method.
- The expression tensile energy absorption refers to the amount of energy per unit surface area of a test piece when stretched to its maximum tensile force. The surface area is calculated as the test length multiplied by the width.
- The expression tensile energy absorption index expresses the tensile energy absorption divided by the grammage.
- The expression modulus of elasticity is the maximum slope of the force-elongation curve times the initial length divided by the width and thickness of the test piece.
