The ASTM D4833/D4833M-07 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) defines a test method for measuring the index puncture resistance of geomembranes and related products. The use of this test method is not considered suitable for testing some woven geotextiles or related products with large openings, such as geonets and geogrids. Geotextile-related products need to be tested according to another ASTM standard, ASTM D6241 (ASTM D6241-14 is the standard test method for static puncture strength of geotextiles and geotextile-related products using a 50 mm probe).

The test method defined in the ASTM D4833 standard is applied to determine the index value of the puncture resistance of geomembranes, geotextiles and related materials. This test method is also used as acceptance criteria testing of commercial shipments of geomembranes and related materials.
A universal testing machine (tensile / pressure tester) is used to meet the requirements of this standard. While testing, a sample is clamped without tension between two circular plates of a ring clamp attachment fixed in a tensile testing machine. A force is then applied to the center of the unsupported portion of the test specimen by a solid steel bar attached to the load gauge until specimen rupture occurs. The highest recorded force value is the puncture resistance value of the sample.
Generally, materials tested according to this standard are also analyzed according to the ASTM D76 standard, which is a specification for the use of tensile testing machines in textiles.
This testing method is used to evaluate the puncture resistance of sharp objects such as rocks and stones embedded in the soil. This test is commonly performed on geotextiles used in the agricultural industry. Geotextiles are also used in land reclamation projects and in highway and road construction. The material is used to protect a barrier and prevent soil erosion during heavy rains.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services for the index puncture resistance of geomembranes and related products under the ASTM D4833/D4833M-07 standard, with our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment .
