A European standard, EN 429, defines a test method for determining the thickness of different layers of resilient floor coverings. Another international standard published for the same purpose is the ISO 24340 standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) (ISO 24340 Flexible floor coverings - Determination of the thickness of layers). This ISO standard also defines a test method for determining the thickness of different layers of resilient floor coverings.

For the purposes of both standards, the term layer means a component of the same composition as part of a flexible floor covering of a given thickness, excluding factory finishes.
Resilient floor coverings are highly engineered sheet and tile products designed to withstand heavy use in a variety of commercial and residential environments. These coatings are produced in many styles and materials and in a variety of performance qualities and are easy to maintain and hygienic. Materials used to create flexible flooring are materials such as PVC, linoleum and rubber. They are considered one of the most durable flooring types suitable for both commercial and residential areas and are ideal for heavy traffic areas.
Resilient floor coverings are usually a mixture of binders, fillers and colors. Fillers may include ground wood, synthetic fibers, or mineral fillers such as limestone and asbestos. The material that binds or adheres the mixture together is either asphalt or resin. There are a variety of resilient floor coverings on the market today, such as linoleum, asphalt, vinyl, rubber, wood and cork.
For the purposes of the EN 429 standard, the expression total thickness refers to the vertical distance between two parallel plates on which a flexible floor covering is placed under a given load. For resilient flooring, thicker does not always mean better. For pavements, the thickness will vary depending on where it will be installed, whether there is a lot of foot traffic, what type of subfloor it is placed on, and the type of pavement chosen.
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides test services for the determination of layer thicknesses, flexible floor coverings within the scope of EN 429 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
