EDANA 300.0-84 Practical Method: Surface Fluffing of Non-Woven Fabrics

EDANA 300.0-84 Practical Method: Surface Fluffing of Non-Woven Fabrics

EDANA, the European Disposables and Nonwovens Association, is an organization that promotes the sustainable development of the industry and advocates the benefits of nonwovens for society. The standard “EDANA 300.0-84 Practical method: Surface fluffing of nonwovens” developed by this organization describes a procedure for measuring particle loss from the surface of nonwovens. This procedure evaluates the weight of particles, especially fibers, that are likely to detach from the surface of the nonwoven under conditions of use.

When testing, the samples and adhesive tape are conditioned for 24 hours and tested at 23 degrees Celsius and 50 percent relative humidity, or at 20 degrees Celsius and 65 percent relative humidity. Test conditions must be specified in the report.

This procedure is based on methods already used internally by the industry and adapted by the EDANA Technical Committee.

In principle, when testing, a roller covered with a certain adhesive tape passes over the non-woven fabric ten times.

In the proposed method, samples are weighed before and after the rolling process, the difference in weight gives a quantitative measure of the particles collected by the adhesive rollers. Measurements are taken on both sides of the nonwoven fabric and in the MD and CD directions.

The equipment used in these tests includes:

  • Cylinder: Plexiglass cylinder (outer diameter 70 mm, width 60 mm, weight 390 g including axle but excluding adhesive, and speed 240 cm/min).
  • Adhesive tape (double surface type): R reference 3M 400 S, width 50 mm.
  • Sample: 50 mm x 400 mm in size. The tested area (5 cm x 15 cm = 75 cm2) is limited by two adhesive silicone papers placed on the sample as shown in the diagram. The aim is to prevent the fibers from elongating when the cylinder changes direction.
  • Balance: It is a balance that can determine mass with an accuracy of 0,0001 g.

Nonwoven fabrics are increasingly preferred because they have the required properties according to the end product and because they allow the versatile use of different fibers to produce the end product, and also because they eliminate the spinning and weaving processes. Function and general textile-physical and chemical properties should be considered as a function of the very different end uses of the various materials.

Nonwovens are innovative, high-tech, engineered fabrics made from fibers. They are used alone or in combination with other materials in a wide variety of consumer and industrial products.

Nonwoven fabrics are designed for specific applications, whether consumer or industrial applications, from thin, lightweight nonwovens to strong and durable nonwovens. The combination of their specific properties, whether through the choice of raw material, the formation and bonding methods used, or the finishing processes applied such as printing, embossing, lamination and the like, allows for high-performance products.

Lint is a small, fine fiber that separates from the surface of the fabric and yarn. A tighter weave in cotton means less lint, but also less softness. Generally, the softer the product, the more lint is seen. Typically, nonwovens are manufactured by hydro-entangling millions of short fibers together to form the substrate. This creates a strong bond, but under force, the short fibers break and are deposited as lint on the applied surface. This is especially true of wipers containing cellulose, which are used wet, and are likely to retain cellulose if sufficient force is applied. These short fiber nonwovens are appropriately considered low-lint and should be used for low-risk general applications where appropriate.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “EDANA 300.0-84 Practical method: Surface fluffing of nonwoven fabrics” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
