The “FORD WSS-M4D1005 Thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer (TPO)” standard developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) mainly consists of two parts:

The material defined in these standards is thermoplastic molding compounds based on thermoplastic polyolefin elastomers with a maximum of 1 percent mineral filler for in-mold colored (B2) and painted (B17) applications.
The WSS-M4D1005-B1 standard is designed for material used for mold-tinted exterior bumper applications (where the front panel thickness is less than 3 mm) that require initial high melt flow rates. Any color additives must be reviewed and approved by the raw material supplier and Ford material engineering. Ultraviolet/process/heat stabilizers, particularly for press-tinted applications, must be in the base resin from the material supplier, not in the color concentrate.
The WSS-M4D1005-B2 standard is designed for material used for painted exterior bumper applications (where the fascia thickness is less than 3 mm) that require a high initial melt flow rate. Any color additives must be reviewed and approved by the raw material supplier and Ford material engineering. Process/heat stabilizers must be in the base resin from the material supplier.
Material approved to the WSS-M4D1005-B1 standard is likely to contain additives that may adversely affect paint adhesion, so should not be used in painted applications.
Material approved to the WSS-M4D1005-B2 standard is unlikely to contain ultraviolet stabilisers, so prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause chalking and loss of gloss.
This specification requires the use of approved sources. When this specification is listed on a drawing, CAD file or other document, only sources identified in the Ford approved source list may be used. The list of approved sources is available on the Ford website or may be obtained externally through Ford Materials Engineering.
This specification is based on virgin material and does not allow for the addition of recycled content.
The use of regrind is permitted for economic/environmental reasons. Component manufacturers using this specification must complete DV and PV testing with the amount of regrind allowed and the maximum regrind content allowed must be specified on the engineering drawing. Any changes to what is specified on the drawing must be approved by the official Ford Motor Company.
For performance, exterior mold-colored substrates approved to WSS-M4D1005-B1 must comply with all the requirements of WSS-M98P13-C/Latest. Painted substrates approved to WSS-M4D1005-B2 must comply with all the paint performance requirements of WSS-M2P181-C/Latest. Parts must meet applicable SDS/CDS requirements.
The material supplier must retain 6-14 kg of pelletized material or batch produced for 23 months (WSS-M4D1005-B2 only).
Unless otherwise determined by Ford Materials Engineering, the control plan and analysis certificate batch testing requirements shall include, but are not limited to:
Materials requiring high strain rate, creep or fiber oriented tensile modulus may need to be tested in accordance with WSS-M99D68-A1/Latest, Thermoplastic Property Determination for CAE, High Strain Rate Tensile, Creep and Tensile Modulus requirements. Material Suppliers should be prepared to provide data upon request.
All testing must be performed on manufactured production materials unless the correlation to a non-production process has been reviewed and approved by Ford materials engineering.
Unless otherwise stated, all tests are performed on injection molded, single-ended gated test specimens. Test specimens A and D are molded using the molding conditions defined in ISO 1873-2. Additional annealing is not permitted. The number of specimens required is shown in the relevant tables. Specimen specifications are given in the standard.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “FORD WSS-M4D1005 Thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer (TPO)” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
