IPC-4103B Basic Materials Specification for High Speed / High Frequency Applications

The IPC-4103B standard published by the Institute of Printed Circuits (IPC) describes the requirements for high speed / high frequency performance plastic substrates used in the manufacture of printed boards for microstrip, strip line and high speed digital electrical and electronic circuits. This standard applies only to the plastic substrate thickness defined in the standard sheets as measured over the dielectric. As a general guideline, laminates controlled by this standard generally have a spread factor of less than 0,005.

This standard includes a system for identifying coated and uncoated plastic laminate and bonding layer materials for conventional and enhanced part number calling. Conventional laminate part numbers reflect conventional specification values. The enhanced laminate part numbering includes the traditional part number in Table 1-1 (Conventional Laminate Example) as well as the advanced information in Table 1-2 (Advanced Laminate Example). Adhesive layer part numbers are given in Table 1-3 (Adhesive Layer Example).

Among the IPC standards, in particular, the IPC-4101 and IPC-4103 standards describe various requirements for laminate materials, both of which help ensure interchangeability and compatibility in the printed card stack.

A set of specification sheets is included at the end of this standard. These pages outline the requirements for both laminate and bonding layers for each product class. Specification sheets are organized by a particular reinforcement type, resin system, or construction, and ordering is provided by this sheet number. Laminate and binder sheet requirements for materials of similar composition are on the same specification sheet for convenience. The material identifier “L” indicates the laminate material and “P” indicates the pre-impregnated material. A bonding layer may be a thermoset or thermoplastic film or a thermoplastic or thermoset prepreg.

Dielectric permittivity, nominal permittivity, is identified by a letter as specified in the relevant technical specifications sheet, while dielectric permittivity tolerance is identified by a number.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for basic materials for high speed / high frequency applications, within the scope of IPC-4103B standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
