The ASTM D1264-18 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes a test method for evaluating the resistance of a lubricating grease to water washout from a bearing when tested at 38 and 79 degrees Celsius under prescribed laboratory conditions. This test method should not be considered equivalent to service evaluation tests. Sensitivity and deviation were determined using grease with NLGI ratings ranging from 0 to 3 in the research report.

This test method is not considered suitable for some greases containing highly volatile components. This test method does not attempt to account for sample evaporation. It is the user's responsibility to determine whether the evaporation of the sample contributes significantly to the mass loss at the required drying temperature.
Briefly, this test method is intended to determine the resistance of greases to water washing from ball bearings under test conditions. No relationship has been established with field service.
During testing, grease is filled into a ball bearing, then the bearing is placed in a housing with specified clearances and rotated at 600 rpm. Water controlled at the specified test temperature is multiplied into the bearing housing at a rate of 5 mL/s. The amount of grease washed out in one hour gives a measure of the grease's resistance to water washout.
Greases mainly have the following functions:
The use of greases allows equipment manufacturers to reduce the size of the bearing housing. Greases are expected to carry high loads at low speeds. The application of greases therefore reduces the cost of equipment services. The ASTM D1264-18 standard is a standard designed to have quality automotive service greases on the market. While preparing this standard, the ASTM D4950 standard was taken as a basis (ASTM D4950-19 Standard classification and specification standard for Automotive service greases).
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides standard testing services for the determination of water washing properties of lubricating greases within the scope of ASTM D1264-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
