The standard “DIN 18040 Construction of accessible buildings – Design principles”, developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), consists of a number of standards organized under the same title:

The DIN 18040-1 standard cancels and replaces the standard “DIN 18024-2 Construction of accessible buildings - Part 2: General accessible buildings and workplaces, design principles”. This standard describes the technical preconditions under which buildings and structures are accessible. This standard applies to the barrier-free planning, execution and equipment of general accessible buildings and their external areas. Accessibility here refers to the parts of the building and their associated external areas that are intended for public use. Accessible buildings include, in particular, cultural and educational institutions, sports and recreational facilities, healthcare facilities, office and administrative facilities and courthouses, shops and restaurants, parking spaces, garages and toilet facilities.
Compared to the DIN 18024-2 standard, this standard no longer covers rules for workplaces. Sensory requirements have been added to this standard. In addition, the contents of the above-mentioned standard have been fundamentally revised and restructured.
As a rule, each individual clause initially specifies the protection objectives that must be achieved as a prerequisite for accessibility. It is then shown how the protection objective can be achieved, if necessary by differentiating it according to the various needs of different groups of people. The aim of the DIN 18040-1 standard is to design the built living environment to be accessible and to enable as many people as possible to use it in a traditional way, without special obstacles and essentially without the help of others.
The standard “DIN 18024-1 Barrier-free built environment - Part 1: Streets, squares, footpaths, public transport, recreation areas and playgrounds - Design principles” is currently being revised and will remain valid until the new standard is published.
The aim of this standard is to design the built living environment to be accessible and to enable as many people as possible to use it in a traditional way, without special obstacles and essentially without assistance from others. It describes the technical preconditions under which buildings and structures are accessible.
This standard takes into account the needs of people with visual, hearing or motor impairments and people using mobility aids and wheelchairs. Some requirements of this standard even lead to an improvement in application for other groups of people, such as tall and short people, people with cognitive impairments, the elderly, children and people with strollers or luggage. Special attention has been paid to the participation of the affected people and the application of their experiences to the installation requirements.
The DIN 18040-2 standard applies to the barrier-free planning, execution and equipment of flats, apartment buildings and their external areas intended for development and domestic use. The requirements for the infrastructure of apartment buildings usually also take into account unrestricted wheelchair access. Within flats, a distinction is made between barrier-free flats and barrier-free and unrestricted wheelchair access. This standard was prepared by the Working Committee "NA 005-01-11 AA Construction of accessible buildings".
