The ASTM D7158/D7158M-20 standard published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes a method for calculating the wind resistance of asphalt roofing materials when applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Material designs that depend on wind clamping or product rigidity cannot be evaluated using this test method. This test method calculates the lifting force applied to asphalt roofing materials by the effect of wind at a certain speed and compares it with the mechanical lifting resistance of asphalt roofing materials. An asphalt roofing material is determined to be wind resistant at a given base wind speed when the measured lift resistance exceeds the calculated lift for that speed.

Updates to the ASTM D7158 standard were made in the early 2000s based on extensive research conducted by companies whose wind engineering consultants produce asphalt roofing materials. When this standard was first published, asphalt roofing materials with a basic wind speed of 90 mph were classified as D class, 120 mph asphalt roofing materials as G class, and asphalt roofing materials exceeding 150 mph as H class. These limits have been changed several times since then. In the latest update, the classifications have been revised to accommodate the use of any of the wind speed methodologies.
Roofs are an easy target for wind, one of nature's most unpredictable and powerful forces. High winds can cause sudden and devastating roof damage, but asphalt roofing materials can also be adversely affected on windy days without rain, hail, sleet or snowfall. Asphalt roofing materials raise concerns about possible damage to the roof from wind.
The wind does not always move in a steady, even flow. It moves at various speeds and directions in response to temperature and pressure differences in the atmosphere and the topography of the terrain. The wind hitting the side of the building moves the roof up and down with the uplift pressure. This makes the roof vulnerable to wind damage.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services to determine the wind resistance of asphalt roofing materials under the ASTM D7158/D7158M-20 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
