Developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM D4049-20 standard provides a test method for determining the ability of a grease to adhere to a metal surface when exposed to water spray under prescribed laboratory conditions. Results from the use of this test method show correlation in operations involving direct water jet pulse, such as steel mill roll neck bearing service. This test method is used for quality control and purchasing specifications.

Lubricating grease is a semi-solid lubricant. This grease is used in specialty lubrication applications such as roller bearings and low speed gear systems where the fluid lubricant fails. Grease can be in the liquid phase as well as in the solid phase. The solid phase keeps the liquid-based liquid in the structure to preserve the structural integrity. Under operating conditions, the lubricating liquid in the grease is released to perform the lubrication process. The grease returns to the semi-solid state when the cutting condition is removed.
Grease essentially has three components: base lubricant fluid, thickener and additives. The liquid lubricant in the grease is immobilized by a network of thickeners or solid particles such as inorganic clay or other fillers.
The water resistance of the grease is an important property for grease used in a water-exposed environment. Contamination of grease with water not only reduces the lubricating capacity of the grease, but also causes loss of rust and corrosion protection. ASTM D4049 provides a standardized test method for determining the resistance of lubricating grease to water spray. This test determines how much grease will be removed when water is sprayed on it.
Grease with low consistency or poor adhesion loses a large amount of weight under water spray. Adding a high molecular weight polymer to the lubricant significantly increases the viscosity of the base oil.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for determining the resistance of lubricating grease to water spray within the scope of ASTM D4049-20 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
