ASTM D610-08 Standard Practice for Evaluating Degree of Rust on Painted Steel Surfaces

ASTM D610-08 Standard Practice for Evaluating Degree of Rust on Painted Steel Surfaces

The ASTM D610-08 standard, developed by the American Testing and Materials Association (ASTM), defines a method for assessing the degree of corrosion on painted steel surfaces. There are visual examples showing the percentage of rust in the standard. In case of disagreement, these examples are taken as the basis. These visual examples were designed in collaboration with the Protective Coatings Society (SSPC) to further standardize the methods. The photographs are used to estimate the percentage of other coating defects on various substrates. However, this standard does not include the assessment of rust spread around an originally prepared notch or cavity.

The amount of rust under or inside a paint film is an important factor in determining whether a coating system needs to be repaired or replaced. This test method provides a standard tool for measuring the amount and distribution of visible surface rust.

The degree of corrosion is assessed using a scale of zero to ten, based on the percentage of visible surface rust. The distribution of rust is classified as spot rust, general rust, punctate rust, or hybrid rust.

Assessing the amount of rust on a metal surface is inherently a difficult task. However, the two-part guidance in the standard prepared by the Protective Coatings Association greatly simplifies this. This standard uses visual references to guide the coating surveyor throughout the assessment process, provides a standard method for assessing the degree of rust on painted steel surfaces, and offers effective comparative images showing the percentage of rust. The standard rates the degree of rust on a painted steel surface from 0 to 10, depending on the degree of rust visible to the naked eye.

Spot rusting occurs when most of the rust is concentrated in certain areas of the painted surface. This differs from common rust, which manifests itself as rust spots of various sizes randomly spread over the surface area. Spot rust shows up as very small rust spots scattered across the surface, while combining the scatter patterns shown in the reference photographs can result in a hybrid pattern.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services to evaluate the degree of corrosion on painted steel surfaces, within the scope of ASTM D610-08 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
