EN ISO 2884-2 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Viscosity Using Rotary Viscometers - Part 2: Disc or Ball Viscometer Operated at a Specified Speed

The standard “EN ISO 2884-2 Paints and varnishes - Determination of viscosity using rotary viscometers - Part 2: Disc or ball viscometer operated at a specific speed”, based on a European standard and published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes a general procedure for determining the viscosity of paints, varnishes and related products with viscosities up to 34 Pa· s . This standard is mainly applicable during production and thinning.

EN ISO 2884-2 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Viscosity Using Rotary Viscometers - Part 2: Disc or Ball Viscometer Operated at a Specified Speed

This standard complements the following international standards:

  • ISO 2431 Paints and varnishes - Determination of flow time using flow cups
  • ISO 2884-1 Paints and varnishes - Determination of viscosity using rotary viscometers - Part 1: Cone and plate viscometer operated at high shear rate

For more accurate methods of measuring viscosity, the standard “EN ISO 3219 Plastics - Polymers/resins in liquid form or in emulsions or dispersions - Determination of viscosity using a rotary viscometer with a defined shear rate” applies.

The specified apparatus can be used in both laboratory and factory environments to determine the viscosity of a product and to monitor the viscosity during dilution during a production process.

The EN ISO 2884-2 standard describes a general procedure for determining the viscosity of paints, varnishes and related products as well as binders. This method is primarily used to determine the relative viscosity of a product and to monitor it during dilution during a production process. This standard describes the relative measurement of viscosity using disc or ball spindles at specified speeds.

The method specified in this standard is suitable for all paints and varnishes, whether Newtonian or not. It can also be applied to materials containing particle dispersions.

The rotational viscometer used in these tests can be of two types:

  • Digital display viscometer capable of operating at 562 rpm plus/minus 2 percent shaft speed and providing accuracy to within 1 percent of full scale reading for a Newtonian fluid in the viscosity ranges specified in this standard. Torque is measured by an electronic method.
  • Analog display viscometer capable of operating at 562 rpm plus/minus 2 percent mph and providing accuracy to within 1 percent of full-scale reading for a Newtonian fluid in the viscosity ranges specified in this standard. A spring is used to counterbalance the torque produced by the fluid.

Shafts can be of the following types:

  • Disc shaft (type 1), 1,5 Pa.For viscosities up to s, a Newtonian fluid with a viscosity of about 200 s−1 for use with medium shear rate. The disc shall have cross channels designed to produce a gentle agitating action. Dimensions shall be as shown in the figure given in the standard.
  • Ball shaft (type 2 and 3), 6,5 Pa.s (type 2) and 34 Pa.s (type 3) for viscosities up to 44 s, respectively, with a Newtonian fluid−1 ve 20 s−1 for use with average shear rate. Dimensions shall be as shown in the figure given in the standard.

The tests also use a round paint can container with a capacity of 250 ml, a nominal inner diameter of 74 mm, a height of 74 mm, and a filling opening diameter of 61 mm. If a different container is used, the viscometer should be calibrated accordingly. Different can sizes may result in different viscosity readings. Therefore, users are advised to use the same can size when comparing samples.

Tests also use:

  • Temperature controller that can keep the container and liquid at 23 degrees plus/minus 0,3 degrees.
  • Calibrated thermometer (accuracy to 0,3 degrees and graduated in increments of 0,2 degrees or finer9.
  • Calibration fluids: Standard refined mineral oils with Newtonian properties. Viscosities should be within plus/minus 2 percent of the specified values. Viscosities of standard fluids should be determined by an accredited laboratory using an absolute method such as one of those specified in ISO 3104 or ISO 3105 standards.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in science and technology in the world and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the standard “EN ISO 2884-2 Paints and varnishes - Determination of viscosity using rotary viscometers - Part 2: Disc or ball viscometer operated at a specific speed”.
