IEC 60332-1-1 Tests on Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables Under Fire Conditions - Part 1-1

IEC 60332-1-1 Tests on Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables Under Fire Conditions - Part 1-1

The IEC 60332-1-1 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) describes a test apparatus for testing resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single vertical electrically insulated conductor or cable or fiber optic cable under fire conditions. The test method is included in the IEC 60332-1-2 standard. This standard also includes an appendix describing the recommended requirements for performance.

IEC 60332-1-1 Tests on Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables Under Fire Conditions - Part 1-1

Actually, the IEC 60332-1 standard consists of three subsections:

  • IEC 60332-1-1 Part 1-1: Vertical flame propagation test for a single insulated wire or cable – Apparatus
  • IEC 60332-1-2 Part 1-2: Vertical flame propagation test for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for 1 kW premixed flame
  • IEC 60332-1-3 Part 1-3: Vertical flame propagation test for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for identifying flaming droplets/particles

According to the IEC 60332-1-2 standard, fire testing evaluates the fire characteristics of a cable in terms of flame spread. The basis of CE marking for European Union countries is fire classification according to the EN 13501-6 standard. This classification includes performing the fire test according to the test method described in the IEC 60332-1-2 standard. This method forms the basis of fire classes. Besides CE marking, this method also provides important information about the fire characteristics of the cable and is therefore often used in product development and process optimization.

During testing, the sample is fixed vertically between two horizontal supports using appropriately sized copper wire . A burner is positioned so that the inner blue cone of the flame strikes the surface of the sample 475 mm from the lower edge of the upper horizontal support, with the burner at a 45-degree angle. The flame application time depends on the cable diameter.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, provides electrical and fiber optic cables, a single insulated wire under fire conditions within the scope of IEC 60332-1-1 standard. It also provides vertical flame propagation testing services for cable or cable.
