ASTM F1066-04 Standard Specification for Vinyl Composite Floor Tile

ASTM F1066-04 Standard Specification for Vinyl Composite Floor Tile

The standard “ASTM F1066-04 Standard Specification for Vinyl Composition Floor Tile” published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes a procedure for installing vinyl composition tiles with flat or embossed surfaces for flooring applications.

ASTM F1066-04 Standard Specification for Vinyl Composite Floor Tile

Vinyl composition floor tiles within this specification are formulated to be asbestos free and are classified as:

  • Class 1 for solid tile
  • Class 2 for pattern tiles
  • Class 3 for surface pattern tile

These may have smooth or embossed wear surfaces.

Materials and manufacturing requirements are described in this standard as follows:

  • Materials: The tile shall consist of a binder, fillers and pigments. The binder shall consist of one or more poly(vinyl chloride) or vinyl chloride copolymer resins or both, combined with suitable plasticizers and stabilizers. Other suitable polymeric resins may be included as part of the binder.
  • Colour, pattern and wear surface: Colour, pattern and wear surface, as applicable, shall be as specified in the contract or order. Available colours and patterns are specified in the current catalogues of the relevant manufacturers. Colours will vary slightly in tone and shade as they are produced.
  • Solid color tiles: Solid color tiles should be the same everywhere.
  • Patterned tile: In patterned tile, the pattern and colors on the surface of the tile extend completely through the thickness of the tile without significant change, or the colors appearing on the surface extend through the entire thickness of the tile although the appearance of the pattern created by these colors changes through the thickness.
  • Surface patterned tile: The pattern of this tile does not necessarily extend through the entire thickness of the tile. When the wear layer is removed to a depth of 0,254 mm, the appearance of the tile compares favourably with the original appearance of the tile in terms of decoration. The removal of the wear layer can be carried out by any suitable method.

Physical properties are described in this standard as follows:

  • Dimensions: Tiles shall be 305 mm x 305 mm unless otherwise specified. A tolerance of plus/minus 2055 mm per linear dimension (305 mm) is allowed when measured in accordance with the ASTM F0,406 standard test method.
  • Thickness: Unless otherwise specified, tiles shall be supplied in thicknesses of 1,588 mm, 2,381 mm and 3,175 mm. A tolerance of plus/minus 386 mm is allowed when measured in accordance with the ASTM F0,127 standard test method.
  • Squareness: When tested in accordance with the ASTM F2055 standard test method, the out-of-squareness of the tile shall not exceed 0,254 mm.

The mechanical properties are described in this standard as follows:

  • Indentation: When the tile is tested according to the ASTM F25 standard test method at 1914 degrees, the indentation after 1 minute shall not be less than 0,152 mm and not more than 0,381 mm. ASTM F1914 according to standard test method When tested at 10 minutes, the indentation shall conform to the requirements in the table and correspond to the indentation recorded at the end of 1 minute. When tested at 1914 degrees according to the ASTM F46,1 standard test method, the indentation at the end of 30 seconds shall be less than 0,813 mm.
  • When the flat surface requirement specified in the embossed tile ASTM F1914 standard test method cannot be met, testing must be performed on non-embossed stock by the manufacturer, and the manufacturer must provide a certificate of compliance.
  • Impact: When tested in accordance with the ASTM F1265 standard test method, the tile shall not crack or break beyond the specified circle of zinc oxide paste. For tiles of 3.175 mm, the weight shall be dropped from a height of 508 mm. For tiles less than 3.175 mm, the weight shall be dropped from a height of 254 mm. All products shall be tested by dropping a 0,065 kg weight 4 times. When testing embossed tile, draw a circle of 76,2 mm plus/minus 3,175 mm diameter on the back of each specimen with a felt tip pen, pencil or other suitable marker. Do not use the zinc oxide paste specified in the ASTM F1265 standard test method. Cracks shall not extend beyond the 76,2 mm plus/minus 3,175 mm diameter circle. The test shall be run on the specimen with the wear surface facing up.

The performance requirements are described in this standard as follows:

  • Deflection: Tile shall deflection a minimum of 1304 mm both crosswise and across the grain without fracture when tested in accordance with the ASTM F25,4 standard test method.
  • Dimensional stability: When tested in accordance with the ASTM F2199 standard test method, linear dimensions shall not vary by more than 0,610 mm per linear foot.
  • Resistance to Chemicals: The chemical resistance of the tile shall be determined in accordance with the test method of ASTM F925. Vinyl composite floor tile shall have no more than a slight change in surface dulling, surface attack, or staining when exposed to the following chemicals:
    • White vinegar (5 percent acetic acid)
    • Rubbing alcohol (70 percent isopropyl alcohol)
    • White mineral oil (medical grade)
    • Sodium hydroxide solution (5 percent sodium hydroxide)
    • Household ammonia solution (5 percent ammonium hydroxide)
    • Household bleach (5,25 percent sodium hypochlorite)
