IEC 62631-3-1 Dielectric and Resistivity Properties of Solid Insulating Materials - Part 3-1: Determination of Resistance Properties (DC Methods) Test

The IEC 62631-3-1 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines a test method for determining the volume resistivity and volume resistivity of electrical insulating materials by applying a direct current voltage. The following important technical changes have been made in the latest update of this standard:

IEC 62631-3-1 Dielectric and Resistivity Properties of Solid Insulating Materials - Part 3-1: Determination of Resistance Properties (DC Methods) Test

  • The IEC 60093 standard has been technically completely revised and included in the new IEC 62631 standard series.
  • Test methods have been updated according to the current state of the art.
  • Volume and surface resistivity and resistivity are now split to include this part of the IEC 62631 standard and the IEC 62631-3-2 standard, respectively.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The expression volume resistance refers to a portion of the insulation resistance resulting from conduction through the volume.
  • The expression volume resistivity expresses the volume resistance related to the volume of a material. For insulating materials, the volume resistivity is usually determined by means of measuring electrodes arranged on a plate of the material. The measured volume resistance is the average of the resistance over possible heterogeneities in the volume included in the measurement, it includes the effect of possible polarization events at the electrodes.
  • Leakage current refers to the leakage current caused by the intended or unintended grounding of earth or metallic structures buried in the earth.

Insulating materials are generally used to electrically isolate the components of an electrical system from each other and from the ground. Solid insulating material also provides mechanical support. For these purposes, it is generally important to have as high insulation resistance as possible, consistent with acceptable mechanical, chemical and heat resistance properties.

The volume resistance is part of the insulation resistance. The bulk resistivity is used as an aid in the selection of insulation material for a particular application. The variation in resistance with temperature and humidity can be large and must be known when designing for operating conditions.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for the determination of the resistance properties of solid insulation materials, within the framework of the IEC 62631-3-1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
