EN 1771 Products and Systems for the Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures - Test Methods - Determination of Injectability and Penetration Testing

A European standard, EN 1771, defines a test method used to determine the injectability and adhesion to concrete of a product in a capillary network by measuring the split strength of cylindrical mortar samples resulting from a sand column injection. Where the product cannot be pre-mixed and then poured into a container of the size used in this standard, the product may be injected using an appropriate method, provided that the pressure can be measured with similar accuracy.

The puncture test principle involves injecting the product under constant pressure into a clear plastic tube filled with graded sand and held in a vertical position. While testing, the product is injected from the lower end of the column and the time taken to obtain the different reference marks drawn by the product along the pipe is measured. This test method is also known as the sand column test. During the test, the tube is placed vertically and the injection is made from the bottom up. The time taken for the product to reach the markings on the tube is used to characterize the injectability of the product.

Used for the protection of architectural surfaces, injection mortar is a voluminous liquid material that can be injected behind plaster, murals or mosaics to fill cracks and voids and to re-adhesion between layers after hardening. Injection mortars mainly consist of one or more binders, aggregates, additives and liquids (usually water).

The EN 1771 test method determines the ability of mortars to fill a capillary network of different granular materials, either dry or pre-wetted, under constant pressure. Injectability is a critical feature for injection joints, which must be suitable for injection through a syringe or tubing to fill internal cracks and voids. This method is also used for testing non-hydraulic injection mortars.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer splitting test services under the EN 1771 standard to determine the injectability of products used for the protection and repair of concrete structures, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment .
