BS 4449 Steel for Concrete Reinforcement - Weldable Reinforcing Steel - Rod, Coil and Uncoiled Product - Specification

Developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), the BS 4449 standard describes requirements for ribbed weldable reinforcing steel used for reinforcing concrete structures. This standard covers steel delivered in the form of bars, coils and uncoiled products.

BS 4449 Steel for Concrete Reinforcement - Weldable Reinforcing Steel - Rod, Coil and Uncoiled Product - Specification

This standard provides definitions according to the grade of steel, product form and dimensions. This standard is used to specify all the normal technical requirements for reinforcing steels, including chemical analysis, mechanical properties, rib geometry, and dimensional tolerances. This standard contains guidelines for three steel grades, all with a characteristic yield strength of 500 MPa but with different ductility properties.

Weldability requirements for all steel grades are defined in terms of chemical composition and specifically carbon equivalent value. Steel bars produced by rerolling of finished products or rolling material whose metallurgical history is not fully documented or unknown are not covered by this standard.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • Reinforced steel expression, suitable for reinforcement of concrete, circular refers to a steel product with a cross-section.
  • The term ribbed reinforcing steel refers to reinforcing steel containing at least two rows of transverse ribs evenly distributed over the entire length.
  • The term longitudinal rib refers to a uniform continuous protrusion parallel to the axis of the reinforcement steel.
  • The term transverse rib refers to the rib on the surface of the reinforcing steel, excluding a longitudinal rib.
  • The expression rib height refers to the distance from the highest point of the rib (transverse or longitudinal) to the surface of the core, measured perpendicular to the axis of the reinforcing steel.
  • The term rib spacing refers to the distance between the centers of two consecutive transverse ribs measured parallel to the axis of the reinforcing steel.
  • The term bar refers to a single length coil of reinforcing steel wound in concentric rings of ribbed reinforcing steel produced in straight lengths.
