The standard "ASTM C1620-16 Standard Specification for Aerosol Polyurethane and Aerosol Latex Foam Sealants" developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes the types, grades, and physical properties of aerosol polyurethane and aerosol latex foams extruded from pressure vessels and intended for building envelope air barrier sealing applications in building construction. For specific aerosol foam sealant applications, the operating temperature limit criteria shall be as agreed upon between the aerosol sealant manufacturer and the purchaser.

For the purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions given in “ASTM C168-05 Standard Terminology for Thermal Insulation”, “ASTM C717-24 Standard Terminology for Building Sealants and Sealants” and “ASTM D883-22 Standard Terminology for Plastics” standards are valid.
According to this standard, the classification is as follows:
Aerosol polyurethane foam sealants are produced by the catalyzed chemical polymerization reaction of proprietary chemical formulations and suitable blowing agents. The product of this reaction is beads that are extruded from pressure vessels through a nozzle device into a building joint at the point of application as a foamed sealant. Bead foam cure is achieved by moisture from the atmosphere and the substrates.
Aerosol latex foam sealants are manufactured by blending proprietary formulations and suitable blowing agents. This blend is extruded from pressure vessels through a nozzle device at the point of application as a foamed sealant into a building joint. Drying of the bead foam then proceeds for a short period of time with loss of formulation moisture.
Aerosol foam sealant can be used as an alternative firebreak sealant if it meets all requirements according to building codes. An assessment report can serve as such a qualification and details the specific sealing applications recognized.
Aerosol foam sealants shall have the physical properties shown in the table given in the standard. Other physical properties, if necessary for engineering design purposes, such as prediction of service temperature extremes, conductor thermal resistance values or fire resistance requirements, shall be specified as agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser.
Aerosol foam sealant may be a part of a firestop assembly if it is fully tested in accordance with the “ASTM E814-10 Standard test method for fire tests of penetration firestop systems” and the “UL 1479 Fire tests of penetration firestops” standard. Aerosol foam sealant as a firestop component shall be installed as specified in the test report or listing schedule. A qualified firestop assembly shall be rated for T and F ratings.
For sampling purposes, the batch consists of all disposable sealant containers purchased and delivered at the same time. If necessary, sampling for inspection tests is carried out for physical properties agreed upon between the sealant manufacturer and the purchaser. The standard “ASTM C390-08 Standard for Sampling and Acceptance of Thermal Insulation Batches” applies for sampling practices where appropriate.
In preparing the test sample, aerosol foam sealant samples for physical property testing shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations unless otherwise specified. Pressure vessels shall be conditioned under controlled temperature and humidity ambient conditions for 24 to 48 hours prior to extrusion of foam sealant beads onto an approved substrate surface. Unless otherwise specified and reported, controlled ambient conditions shall be 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity. Retest samples shall be of sufficient quantity and size to meet the specific test requirements.
The test methods defined in this standard are:
