ISO 2409 Paints and Varnishes - Cross Cut Test

ISO 2409 Paints and Varnishes - Cross Cut Test

The ISO 2409 standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes a test method for evaluating the resistance of paint coatings and varnishes to separation from substrates by cutting a right-angle grid pattern into the coating and penetrating the substrate. The property determined by this test method relates, among other factors, to the adhesion of the coating to the previous coating or substrate. However, this method is not a way to measure adhesion. Where an adhesion measurement is required, the ISO 4624 standard is consulted.

This test method is primarily intended for laboratory use, but is also used for field testing.

The described method is used as a pass/fail test or as a six-stage classification test when conditions are appropriate. When applied to a multi-layer system, the resistance of the individual layers of the coating to separation from each other is also evaluated. This method is carried out on finished objects or specially prepared test specimens.

The test method described in the ISO 2409 standard is also valid for painting on hard surfaces such as metal materials or soft surfaces such as wood and plaster materials, but different test methods should be preferred for these different surfaces. This method is not considered suitable for coatings with a total thickness of more than 250 µm or textured coatings. Incidentally, this method yields widely varying results when applied to coatings designed to give a rough patterned surface.

Good adhesion is an important property for many industries. If a coating comes off a surface easily, it means that the coating cannot protect the underlying surface from environmental influences.

In the cross cut test, six parallel cuts are made using a template and cutter, up to the underlying surface, but without damaging it. The distance between the cuts is no more than 3 mm, depending on the thickness of the coating. Next, six more cuts are made at right angles, resulting in an even rectangular pattern. The test surface is cleaned of crumbs and evaluated by comparison with the images in the table.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides cross-cut testing services for paints and varnishes within the scope of ISO 2409 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
