In the European standard "EN 14223 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Waterproofing of concrete bridge decks and other concrete surfaces that vehicles can pass through - Determination of water absorption rate", a test method is described to determine the amount of water absorption in waterproofing sheets that may affect the functional behavior of these sheets. . In these tests, first the ability of the supplement to absorb water is examined.

For the purposes of this document, water absorbance refers to the amount of increase in mass of the test sample after immersion in water, expressed as a percentage.
In principle, the water absorption of the waterproofing membrane is measured after the test sample is immersed in water for a certain period of time and is determined as the increase in the mass of the test sample.
The equipment and materials used in these tests include:
When starting the test, samples are first taken in accordance with the standard "EN 13416 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Bitumen, plastic and rubber sheets for roof waterproofing - Sampling rules". Test samples should be taken randomly and at a distance of at least 1 m from the end of the roll and 10 cm from the edge of the plate.
Five test specimens with dimensions of 200 plus/minus 1 mm × 200 plus/minus 1 mm are prepared for testing. If the reinforced waterproofing membrane has a surface composed of fine minerals or granules, the surface should be lightly brushed with a steel wire brush to remove any loose minerals or granules. The protective film on the underside must be removed in accordance with the standard “EN 1109 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Bituminous sheets for roof waterproofing - Determination of flexibility at low temperature”. If problems with heterogeneous results arise due to the exhumation of fine minerals or granules, test samples can be taken from pieces without such outcrops. The test sample area becomes the same as described above.
Test samples are dried for 50 hours plus/minus 3 minutes at 24 degrees plus/minus 30 degrees and then conditioned for 23 hour plus/minus 3 minutes at 50 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees and 1 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity before testing. During drying and conditioning, test samples are placed in vertical hanging with a gap of at least 20 mm between test samples.
When performing the test, the test sample is weighed and then immersed in water at 23 degrees plus/minus 3 degrees for 28 days plus/minus 4 hours. The test sample should be placed vertically suspended in water with a gap of at least 20 mm between test samples. The entire area of the test sample is covered with water for the entire test period. After 28 days of water immersion, the test sample is air dried for 23 hours plus/minus 3 minutes at 50 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees and 5 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity. During air drying, the test sample should be placed hanging vertically with a gap of at least 20 mm between test samples. The set of five test samples is placed in the laboratory with free air space surrounding it (at least 0,5 m on each side). Weigh the test sample again.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, has established "EN 14223 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Waterproofing of concrete bridge decks and other concrete surfaces that vehicles can pass through - It also provides testing services defined in the "Determination of water absorption rate" standard.
