ASTM D3359-17, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), defines test methods for evaluating the adhesion of relatively ductile coating films to metallic substrates by applying and removing pressure sensitive tape over cuts made in the film. Test method A is primarily intended for field use. Test Method B, on the other hand, is more suitable for use in laboratory or business environments. Also, test Method B is not considered suitable for films thicker than 125 µm unless wider gap cuts are used and there is a clear agreement between the buyer and seller.

These test methods are used to evaluate whether the adhesion of a coating to a substrate is sufficient for the user's application. No distinction is made between higher adhesion levels where more complex measuring methods are required.
The test methods described in the ASTM D3359-17 standard are similar in content to the methods described in the ISO 2409 standard, but they are not technically equivalent. In multi-layer systems during application, adhesion failure may occur between coats so that the adhesion of the coating system to the substrate cannot be determined.
The test methods described have been widely used in various industries and applications since their first publication. These methods are applied in laboratories and businesses in both newly applied and aged protective coating systems. The tests are relatively easy to perform and do not require special equipment. However, there are many potential difficulties in successfully performing such a basic test.
Test method A described is primarily intended for use on coating systems above 125 µm. Test method B, on the other hand, is generally designed for use on coating systems below 125 µm. Both test methods can be performed in the workshop, in the field or in the laboratory. The test was developed to assess the adhesion of the coating to steel, but is also used on other hard surfaces. These test methods are also used successfully on softer surfaces, for example wood and plaster surfaces.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for tape test adhesion rating, within the scope of ASTM D3359-17 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
