DIN VDE 0603 Meter Panels
The "DIN VDE 0603 Meter panels" standard, published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), consists of the following sub-sections published under the same title:

- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-1 Part 1: General requirements” applies to measuring devices in electrical systems used for the transmission, distribution, and measurement of power at nominal voltages up to 400 V, both indoors and outdoors, in commercial and residential installations (such as houses, schools, administrative buildings, office buildings). Measuring devices must be installed as part of the electrical installation in accordance with the DIN VDE 0100 standard. This part of the standard cannot be used alone to define or determine the conformity of a measuring device. Measuring devices must comply with the relevant part of DIN 0603 series, starting from Part 2.
Measuring devices conforming to this standard are suitable for use at the following ambient temperatures:
- Indoor temperatures normally don't exceed 25 degrees, but occasionally reach 30 degrees.
- Outdoors, temperatures normally don't exceed 35 degrees Celsius, but occasionally reach 40 degrees Celsius.
Thermal effects from direct sunlight are not taken into account in this standard. Furthermore, this standard does not apply to enclosures containing protective devices and similar energy-consuming devices in accordance with DIN EN 60670-24. This standard does not apply to low-voltage switchgear and control equipment as defined in the DIN EN 61439 series of standards. However, for the placement of electrical metering equipment for the metering point or network operator in low-voltage switchgear and control equipment in accordance with DIN EN 61439, the relevant functional areas, requirements, and meter panel depth must be provided as minimum dimensions from this standard.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-1-100 Part 100: Integration of Intelligent Metering Systems” describes the requirements for integrating intelligent metering systems into meter panels according to the DIN VDE 0603 series of standards. This standard is intended for installers of metering systems and is considered a guideline for manufacturers of meter panels and components of intelligent metering systems.
This standard outlines requirements for the integration of smart metering systems into meter panels/boards. These meter panels conform to the broader DIN VDE 0603 series, which covers consumer distribution boards and meter panels for AC 400 V systems in residential, commercial, and similar installations. This standard addresses the necessary adaptations for modern electronic household meters (eHZ) and future smart metering infrastructure.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-2-1 Part 2-1: Measuring panels for direct measurement up to 63 A” describes additional requirements for meter panels for direct measurement up to 63 A. Intermittent and continuous operation for applications according to DIN 18015-1 are covered in this document. In addition to the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard, this standard includes regulations for functional surfaces. It defines dimensions and specifies wiring requirements for direct measurement. Furthermore, this standard defines conditions for outdoor use.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-2-2 Part 2-2: Meter panels for semi-indirect metering (current transformer metering) up to 1000 A” describes additional requirements for meter panels for semi-indirect metering up to 1000 A. This standard should be used in conjunction with the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard. These meter panels are connected directly or indirectly to the general electrical network. These meter panels are defined with a metering and power section. In addition to the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard, this standard includes requirements for the arrangement of functional surfaces, dimensions, and wiring. Depending on the nominal current, ranges up to 250 A and up to 1000 A are defined for various designs. Since transformer systems are always assumed to be in continuous operation, a nominal load factor of 1 is specified in this standard. Systems for intermittent operation (normal household load) and nominal currents up to 125 A are also defined.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-3-1 Part 3-1: Main line branch terminals” applies to main line branch terminals for copper conductors with a cross-sectional area of up to 70 mm², for use in meter panels and main line junction boxes.
This standard specifies the requirements for mainline branch terminals (also known as distribution terminals or branch clamps) used with copper conductors with a cross-sectional area of up to 70 mm². These terminals are designed for mounting on meter boards (electrical meter panels) and mainline junction boxes in low-voltage electrical systems.
This standard is part of the broader DIN VDE 0603 series, which covers meter boards for power distribution and metering in residential, commercial and similar installations. It replaces the earlier DIN VDE 0603-2 standard and is now fully mandatory, introducing stricter requirements for safety, torque stability and compatibility in meter connection areas.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-3-2 Part 3-2: Device for mounting and connecting electronic household meters (eHZ) to meter panels (BKE)” describes mounting and connecting devices (BKE) for pluggable electronic household meters (eHZ) with a specific contact arrangement, a nominal voltage not exceeding 400 V, and a nominal current not exceeding 63 A, for use in meter panels according to DIN VDE 0603 or similar systems. This standard must be implemented in conjunction with the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard.
This standard defines the use of mounting and connection devices (PCDs) for indoor and outdoor applications. Mounting and connection devices are used for uninterrupted meter replacement. They are not suitable for switching on and off lower-level customer systems under load. Mounting and connection devices are available in integrated and adaptive versions. Mounting and connection devices in adapter design are intended for retrofitting meter panels according to the DIN 43870 series and meter panels according to the DIN 43853 standard. Mounting and connection devices in adapter design are also intended for older type meter panels, provided that they have been approved for the installation and operation of meters to date.
- The standard “DIN VDE 0603-3-3 Part 3-3: Terminal connectors for meters” applies to meter terminal connectors for use in meter panels according to the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard, with a nominal voltage of 400 V AC and a nominal current of 63 A.
This standard contains the requirements for terminal connectors (meter terminal blocks) used to connect electricity meters in meter panels. These connectors are designed for systems compliant with the DIN VDE 0603-1 standard, having the following characteristics:
- Nominal voltage: AC 400 V
- Nominal current: Up to 63 A
This standard is part of the broader DIN VDE 0603 series, which covers meter boards and distribution boards for low-voltage electrical installations (up to 400 V) in residential, commercial, and similar applications. It ensures safe and standardized connections of electricity meters in network metering systems.
In general, DIN VDE 0603 standards define the requirements for meter panels and related components in low-voltage electrical installations (up to 400 V AC). These standards are considered important for the following reasons:
- Security: They ensure the safe design, installation, and operation of meter panels housing electricity meters, distribution equipment, and connections in residential, commercial, and similar buildings (e.g., homes, offices, schools). This includes protection against electrical hazards, proper terminal connections, and integration of modern smart metering systems.
- Standardization and compatibility: They define uniform dimensions, mounting requirements, and functional areas (e.g., for direct or indirect measurement up to specific currents such as 63 A or higher). This enables interoperability between components from different manufacturers, electricity meters (including electronic household meters, eHZ), and smart metering systems.
- Regulatory compliance: Compliance with DIN VDE 0603 standards is often required by utility companies and building codes for new installations or upgrades. It integrates with broader standards such as DIN VDE 0100 for electrical installations.
- Support for modern technologies: Some parts of the series (e.g., DIN VDE 0603-100 standard) address the integration of smart meters, which are crucial for energy transition, network modernization, and accurate billing.
In general, these standards help prevent installation errors, ensure reliable energy supply and metering, and improve safety in everyday electrical systems.
