ISO 6230 Manganese Ores - Determination of Size Distribution by Sieving
The standard "ISO 6230 Manganese ores - Determination of size distribution by sieving" developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) describes the methods to be used for determining the size distribution of natural or processed manganese ores such as pellets, sinters and other agglomerated ores by sieving. In this international standard, the terms manganese ore or ore refer to all the types of materials listed above.

The methods described in this standard are equally applicable to sizing using one or more sleeves. The purpose of this standard is to provide a basis for testing manganese ore involving sizing and to provide a basis for use by contracting parties in the sale and purchase of this material.
When this standard is used for comparative purposes, agreements on the detailed method to be used should be made between the manufacturer and the consumer in order to eliminate sources of disagreement.
For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:
- A lot is a specific quantity of ore processed or produced under conditions that are assumed to be uniform.
- A shipment is a quantity of ore delivered at one time. A shipment may consist of one or more lots or parts of lots.
- Increment refers to the amount of ore taken from a shipment at one time by the sampling device or the amount of ore taken by the increment division method.
- Subsample means a quantity of ore consisting of two or more increments taken from a shipment or an aggregation of two or more increments, each of which may be crushed separately or divided as required.
- Gross sample means a quantity of ore consisting of all increments taken from a consignment or of all increments or all sub-samples put together, each of which may be crushed separately or divided as required.
- Test sample: Any sample prepared from each increment, subsample, or gross sample in accordance with the method specified for that type of sample, for the determination of size distribution, moisture content, chemical composition, or other physical properties.
- Dimensional sample: Refers to a sample taken to determine the dimensional distribution of a shipment or a portion of a shipment.
- A particle refers to a discrete coherent body of matter, regardless of size.
- Particle size (in sieving analysis) refers to the size of the smallest sieve opening through which the particle passes and the size of the largest sieve opening at which the particle is retained.
- The nominal top size refers to the smallest screen in the range available in the R 20 series, so that no more than 5 percent of the ore is retained.
- Size distribution refers to the quantitative grouping of particles in a sample according to size. It is expressed as the percentage of the sample that passes or is retained by selected sieves relative to the total mass of the sample.
- Sieve analysis refers to the method of determining the size distribution of an ore by sieving.
When performing the test, in principle, the manganese ore sample is subjected to sieving procedures for the purpose of determining the size distribution of the constituent particles. The size distribution is expressed in terms of the percentage by mass that passes or is retained by the selected sieves.
In this standard, the general principles of the screening process are explained as follows:
- Before starting the dimensioning, it is necessary to plan the entire sequence of procedures to be followed. The sequence of procedures should depend on:
- Evaluated manganese ore
- The form in which it was taken (i.e. as discrete increments, subsamples, or combined dimensional sample)
- Available equipment
- Purpose of analysis.
- A typical decision tree that allows the formulation of a sequence of procedures is shown in the figure given in the standard.
- Sieving must be carried out under controlled conditions, strictly in accordance with the ISO 2591 standard.
- For manganese ores subject to significant deterioration it is essential that the body responsible for sizing agrees to use similar equipment and the same procedure so that the results of their analysis are comparable.
- Due to differences in physical properties of manganese ores, sieving analysis should be carried out by two methods for two size fractions: plus 5 mm and minus 5 mm.
- The nominal upper size is defined based on the results of the previous screening or previous analysis.
