Paint Resistance Tests

Paint Resistance Tests

Paint and coating are used in different production processes to ensure the durability and quality of the products and to give the products an attractive appearance. With the widespread use of paints, coatings and varnishes in different industries, it becomes mandatory for companies operating in the paint manufacturing industry to ensure the durability and quality of paint products before offering them to customers. Paints have many properties that help determine their quality, such as adhesion strength, color quality, gloss corrosion resistance and much more.

Paint Resistance Tests

One of the most important properties of paints is adhesion strength. In order to improve the quality of the products, the coating on the products must be made in a way that is extremely effective and suitable, does not separate easily and performs well. Therefore, measuring the separation resistance of coatings is an important process.

To achieve the same, various testing methods are carried out on the products to perform adhesion testing to ensure how efficiently coatings or paints are applied to the substrates. In the paint and coating industries, paint adhesion testing is largely done to determine whether the coating has been applied effectively on surfaces. These tests are carried out using different testing methods such as tensile test, crosshatch test and scratch adhesion test. Among the mentioned test methods, the cross-hatching test is the best test method used to test the separation resistance of paints.

Crosshatch testing is a very popular testing method performed on substrates to analyze the resistance of coatings and varnishes to separation from the substrate. The testing is carried out using a crosshatching tool which helps in cutting the sample in a right angle lattice pattern to break down the material in all directions. By using these test methods, the quality of the material can be decided quickly and easily based on the test results. To test a substrate with multiple coatings, the resistance to separation of different coating layers is easily determined.

According to international standards, these tests involve two different methods. Test Method A involves making an X-shaped cut on the sample using cross-cutting blades. Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape is then applied to the cut. After a few seconds, the tape is removed from the cut, and the adhesion strength is measured using a scale from 0 to 5. Test Method B involves creating a cross-hatching pattern on the sample and removing the separated coating using a soft brush. Adhesion is then determined on a scale from 0 to 5.

For the cross-hatching test, the scale from 0 to 5 indicates:

  • Zero (0) means more than 65 percent space has been removed
  • Five (5) means 0 percent space has been removed

In many applications, paints and coatings require resistance to accidental damage, such as scratches or dents caused by objects moving on them. One such application is coatings for furniture paints, which require a number of properties such as blockage resistance or resistance to household chemicals, as well as resistance to accidental scratches caused by moving various objects.

For example, according to “ASTM D16-24 Standard terminology for paint, related coatings, materials, and applications,” abrasion resistance refers to the ability of a coating to resist visual damage resulting from light abrasion, impact, or pressure, or to resist permanent deformation of the surface of the coating resulting from the application of dynamic mechanical force. represents resistance.
