TS 5808 Paints and Varnishes - Water Based Coating Materials and Systems - For Interior Walls and Ceilings

The TS 5808 standard published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) describes the requirements for water-based coating materials and systems such as paints and varnishes used for interior walls and ceilings. This standard covers water-based coating materials and systems for protection and decoration used on old or new surfaces, coated or uncoated interior walls and ceilings.

The main standards published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM), which is based on the preparation of this standard, are as follows:

• ASTM D2243-20 Standard test method for freeze/thaw resistance of water-based coatings. The test method described includes a procedure to evaluate the effect of the freeze/thaw cycle on the viscosity and visual film properties of water-based coatings.
• ASTM D2486-17 Standard test methods for the scrub resistance of wall paints. These test methods include a procedure for determining the resistance of wall paints to erosion caused by brushing. Test method A describes the failure cycles obtained in the test dye. In test method B, however, the ratio expressed as the percentage of error cycles obtained in the test dye is expressed relative to that obtained in a simultaneous study with a known reference dye.
• ASTM D2196-20 Standard test methods for rheological properties of non-Newtonian materials by rotational viscometer. These test methods cover the determination of the apparent viscosity and shear thinning and thixotropic properties of non-Newtonian materials at a given shear rate range using a rotary viscometer operating in a 600 mL fluid.

The binders generally used for water-based coatings are polyvinyl ethers, polyacrylate or polyurethane resins. Epoxy and alkyd resins are also formulated for water-based coating applications. Water-based coatings have a different viscosity than solvent-based coatings. Therefore, it is necessary to know different application techniques to obtain optimal results.
