The PLM NIOSH 9002 standard, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), defines a test method for the qualitative identification of asbestos and the semi-quantitative determination of the asbestos content of bulk samples. This test method measures the percentage of asbestos detected by the analyst compared to standard area projections, photographs and drawings, or trained experience. This test method is not applicable to samples containing large amounts of fine fibers below the resolution of the light microscope (approximately 0.3 micron). Heat and acid treatment during testing can change the refractive index of asbestos and change its color.

Polarized light microscopy (PLM) uses EPA and NIOSH methods to determine the presence and quantity of asbestos in bulk building materials and soil. Fibers are examined for optical properties such as morphology, color, birefringence, elongation mark, and vanishing angle to determine the type of asbestos present. Visual estimates of concentration are made on a per-area basis. Results are reported as the percentage of asbestos present. Polarized light microscopy is designed to observe and photograph samples that are visible due to their optically anisotropic character. To perform this function, the microscope must be equipped with both a polarizer placed somewhere before the sample in the light path, and an analyzer placed in the optical path between the objective rear aperture and the observation tubes or camera port.
It is a contrast-enhancing technique that improves the quality of the image obtained with birefringent materials compared to other techniques such as polarized light, dark-field and bright-field illumination, differential interference contrast, phase contrast, and fluorescence. Polarized light microscopes have a high degree of sensitivity and are used for both quantitative and qualitative research targeting a wide variety of anisotropic samples.
In short, the PLM NIOSH 9002 test method describes the collection and analysis of asbestos bulk materials using light microscopy techniques.
Qualitative and semi-quantitative PLM (polarized light microscope) for the determination of asbestos in bulk samples, within the scope of PLM NIOSH 9002 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors. It also provides testing services with the method.
