6060 T6/66 Alloy Tests

6060 T6/66 Alloy Tests

The 6060 alloy is one of the most common alloys in the 6000 series. It is a heat treatable alloy with very good corrosion resistance and weldability. It is widely used in window and door frames in residential and commercial applications.

6060 T6/66 Alloy Tests

6060 aluminum alloy is an alloy in the wrought aluminum-magnesium-silicon family. It can be formed by extrusion, forging, or rolling, but as a wrought alloy, it is not used in casting. It is usually heat-treated to produce tempers with higher strength but lower ductility.

The alloy and its various tempers are covered by the following standards:

  • ASTM B221M-21 Standard specification (metric) for aluminum and aluminum alloy extruded bars, rods, wire, profiles, and tubes
  • EN 573-3 Aluminum and aluminum alloys - Chemical composition and form of forged products - Part 3: Chemical composition and form of products
  • EN 754-2 Aluminum and aluminum alloys - Cold drawn bar/bar and tube - Part 2: Mechanical properties
  • EN 755-2 Aluminum and aluminum alloys - Extruded bar/bar, tube and profiles - Part 2: Mechanical properties
  • ISO 6361 Wrought aluminum and aluminum alloys - Plates, strips and sheets

The T6 temper designation means that the aluminum alloy is given a solution heat treatment followed by quenching, cooling and aging. It is one of the most demanded versions of aluminum. Artificial aging enables the material to achieve the desired precipitation hardening. T6 refers to the degree of temper or hardness obtained by precipitation hardening. This grade has a good strength-to-weight ratio and is also heat treatable. With excellent formability and weldability, it is used in the manufacture of engineering and structural applications, boats, furniture and more.

Tempering is a process applied to aluminum that has been strengthened and hardened by heat treatment. By removing the stresses accumulated during the hardening process, the machinability and ductility of the material is increased. Tempering helps create desired properties such as machinability and durability required by the final application.

All tempers are heat treated. The number after the T indicates how the material was processed. These numbers represent the way the material is heat treated, cold worked, and aged to reach a stable state.
