The “ASTM D5379/D5379M-19 Standard Test Method for Shear Properties of Composite Materials by V-Notch Beam Method” standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) , describes a test method covering the shear properties of composite materials reinforced with high-modulus fibers. The composite materials are limited to composites reinforced with continuous or staple fibers in the following material forms:

This shear test concept was originally developed without reference to fiber orientation for use on isotropic materials such as metals or ceramics.
The standard “ ASTM D3878-23 Standard terminology for composite materials” defines terminology related to high-modulus fibers and their composites. The standard “ASTM D883-22 Standard terminology for plastics” defines terminology related to plastics. The standard “ASTM E6-23a Standard terminology for mechanical testing methods” defines terminology related to mechanical testing. The standard “ASTM E456-13 Standard terminology for quality and statistics” defines terminology related to statistics. In case of any conflict between terms, ASTM D3878-23 takes precedence over the other standards. Furthermore, the following terms and definitions specific to this standard are also valid:
When performing the test, a material coupon in the form of a rectangular flat strip with symmetrical central V-notch, schematically shown in the figure given in the standard, is loaded into a mechanical testing machine with a special fixture.
The specimen is placed in the fixture with the notch along the loading line of action by means of an alignment tool that references the fixture. The two halves of the fixture are clamped by a testing machine while monitoring the force. The relative displacement between the two fixture halves loads the notched specimen. By placing two strain gauge elements in the center of the specimen (away from the notches) and oriented along the loading axis at plus/minus 45 degrees to the loading axis, the shear response of the material can be measured.
The loading can be idealized as asymmetric bending, as shown in the shear and bending moment diagrams in Fig. The notches affect the shear stress along the loading direction and provide a more uniform distribution than would be seen without the notches. Although the degree of uniformity is a function of the material orthotropy, the best overall results were obtained with laminates of type [1/2]ns when tested in the 0-90 plane.
This test method is designed to produce shear property data for material properties, research and development, quality assurance, and structural design and analysis. Depending on the orientation of the material coordinate system relative to the loading axis, in-plane or interlaminar shear properties can be evaluated. Factors that affect shear response and therefore must be reported include: material, material preparation and placement methods, specimen stacking order, specimen preparation, specimen conditioning, test environment, specimen alignment and grip, test speed, time at temperature, void content, and volume percent reinforcement.
In anisotropic materials, properties can be obtained in any of six possible shear planes by orienting the test plane of the specimen to the desired material plane (1-2 or 2-1, 1-3 or 3-1, 2-3 or 3-2). Only one shear plane can be evaluated for any specimen. Properties in the test direction that can be obtained from this test method include:
