EVO 170.01 Supply Specification for Extruded, Deep Drawable Plastic Panels

EVO 170.01 Supply Specification for Extruded, Deep Drawable Plastic Panels

Developed by EvoBus, a German-based bus manufacturer, the standard "EVO 170.01 Procurement specification for extruded, deep-drawable plastic panels" specifies requirements for extruded, deep-drawable plastic panels and components manufactured from them. This standard replaces the "Daimler DBL 5481 Deep-drawable extruded plastic panels" standard, which had blocked new designs.

EVO 170.01 Supply Specification for Extruded, Deep Drawable Plastic Panels

This standard applies to the EvoBus and the drives from which component parts for the EvoBus are produced. Unlike "EN ISO 15015 Plastics - Extruded sheets of impact-resistant acrylonitrile-styrene copolymers (ABS, AEPDS and ASA) - Requirements and test methods", a lower specification limit of 25 MPa applies for the tensile stress at yield and 6 kJ/m2 for the Charpy notch impact strength at 23°C.

Color and texture are determined by the order and panel material.

Dimensions are determined by order. The dimension is the thickness measured as stamped on the dent. The data relating to thickness/wall thickness refers to the minimum wall thickness. This minimum wall thickness refers to all surfaces of the component part that can be tested for fire testing in accordance with UN ECE R118 or FMVSS 302/CMVSS 302. Areas not relevant to the test and not subject to fire testing may be below the minimum wall thickness. The optical requirements in these areas must be met.

Filling materials are the material and percentage by weight according to the release sample.

In terms of recyclable content, the use of new production waste is permitted provided it does not adversely affect functional properties and meets the other material requirements of this standard. The use of coextrudate is permitted provided the component drawing does not prohibit it and the carrier layer does not show through the surface layer after deep drawing.

Scratch resistance is tested according to the MBN 55555-6 standard. The chisel scratch test should not cause any damage to the surface. The test is performed on plastic panels.

Hot light aging is tested according to the MBN 55555-5 standard. The limit value must be at least "Grade 3." The test is performed on plastic panels.

Resistance to cleaning agents is tested according to the MBN 55555-7 standard. The limit value must be at most "parameter 2." The test is performed on plastic panels. Leather care foam testing is not required.

The combustion properties must meet the requirements of the EVO 132.40 standard. Burning behavior is tested with two specimens. The material thickness of one specimen must be equal to or less than the minimum wall thickness shown in the drawing, and the material thickness of the other specimen must be equal to or greater than the initial material thickness.

Emissions and odor must meet the requirements of standard DBL 5430. The test is carried out on plastic panels. The odor test is carried out in accordance with standard VDA 270 (method 1), “Variant 2” ((40 degrees, 24 hours).

In short, the EVO 170.01 standard is a procurement specification specifically focused on extruded plastic panels that can be deep-drawn. This standard includes defined technical requirements and test protocols for the panels.

Extruded, deep-drawable plastic panels are thermoplastic sheets produced by extrusion and deep drawing (a type of thermoforming) into three-dimensional forms. They are preferred in applications such as automotive interiors, packaging, or appliance components.

In the extrusion process of plastic sheets, plastic granules are melted and forced through a die to produce smooth sheets. These are typically calibrated with roller trimming units for precise thickness and surface finish. In the deep drawing (thermoforming) process, heated extruded sheets are laid onto or within a mold. Vacuum or pressure forces the soft plastic into the mold's contours. After cooling, the material retains its molded shape. Both positive (forming into a mold) and negative (forming onto a surface) deep drawing are used, depending on the desired internal or external details.

The purpose of these operations is to:

  • Cost-effective molding: Compared to injection molding, thermoforming offers significantly lower mold costs, making it particularly suitable for small batches.
  • Lightweight and fast: Thin-walled panels enable lower weight, faster cooling times and efficient production.
  • Material versatility: A wide range of thermoplastics can be used, such as ABS, PS, PET, PC, PE, PP, PMMA, etc. These also include co-extruded or multi-layer versions.
  • Surface customization: Panels can be produced with a variety of finishes, from high gloss to textured, printed or coated surfaces, without secondary finishing steps.

Practical applications of this process include:

  • Electronics and automotive: Used for instrument panels, membrane switch overlays or 3D enclosures with integrated graphics or ESD protection.
  • Packaging and Appliances: Commonly used for trays, protective sleeves, or food packaging where low cost, lightweight, and customizable shapes are beneficial.

Extruded, deep-drawable plastic panels are essential in modern manufacturing because they uniquely combine material efficiency, design flexibility, and cost-effectiveness to create lightweight, durable, and complex three-dimensional components. These plastic panels are designed to be easily thermoformed into deep, detailed three-dimensional shapes. This is crucial for applications requiring molded contours, indentations, and curvatures, such as vehicle interiors, appliance enclosures, or packaging trays.

Compared to metal or solid molded plastic, extruded thermoplastic panels are much lighter, reducing overall weight. This results in better fuel efficiency in vehicles and lower packaging and shipping costs.

Meanwhile, extrusion and thermoforming (deep drawing) are a faster and cheaper process than injection molding for medium and large parts, especially in small to medium-sized productions.
