EN 934 Additives for Concrete, Mortar and Plaster

EN 934 Additives for Concrete, Mortar and Plaster

EN 934, a European standard, describes the requirements and provides test methods for additives used in concrete, mortar, and plaster. The manufacturer or authorized representative is responsible for ensuring that additives bearing the CE mark possess all the properties required in this standard annex . This standard, under the main heading "Additives for concrete, mortar, and plaster," consists of the following sections:

EN 934 Additives for Concrete, Mortar and Plaster

  • EN 934-1 Part 1: Common requirements
  • EN 934-2 Part 2: Concrete admixtures - Definitions, requirements, conformity, marking and labeling
  • EN 934-3 Part 3: Additives for masonry mortar - Definitions, requirements, conformity and marking and labeling
  • EN 934-4 Part 4: Mortar additives for prestressing tendons - Definitions, requirements, conformity, marking and labeling
  • EN 934-5 Part 5: Shotcrete admixtures - Definitions, requirements, conformity, marking and labeling
  • EN 934-6 Part 6: Sampling, evaluation and verification of constancy of performance

EN 934-1 standard describes common requirements for all additives covered by EN 934-2, EN 934-3, EN 934-4, and EN 934-5 standards, which include specific requirements for each type of additive. The corrosion behavior requirements in this standard are not applicable to chloride-based additives.

The EN 934-2 standard describes the definitions and requirements of additives for use in concrete. This standard covers plain, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete admixtures used in construction site mixed, ready mixed and precast concrete. The performance requirements in this standard apply to additives used in concrete of normal consistency. It may not be applicable to admixtures intended for other types of concrete, such as semi-dry and moist soil mixes. Provisions regulating the practical application of additives in concrete production, ie requirements on composition, mixing, placement, curing and similar principles of concrete-containing additives are beyond the scope of this standard.

In the EN 934-3 standard, the properties and conformity criteria of the additives used in cement-based masonry mortar are explained. This standard covers two types of additives used in ready-made and construction site wall mortars as long-term retarder and air-entraining / plasticizer. The provisions regarding the use of additives for masonry mortar are not covered by this standard, the standards EN 998-1 and EN 998-2 apply in this regard (EN 988 Zinc and zinc alloys - Specifications for rolled flat products for building).

In the EN 934-4 standard, the requirements and conformity criteria of additives for use in joints are defined for the pre-tensioning of tendons according to the EN 447 standard. This standard only covers additives for use in mixed wort. Provisions for the use of mortar additives are not covered by this standard, but only the EN 447 standard applies (EN 447 Mortar for prestressing tendons - Basic requirements).

In the EN 934-5 standard, the requirements and suitability of additives intended for use in shotcrete are defined. The types of additives covered by this standard are: set accelerator and non-alkaline set accelerator additives, consistency control additives and bond improving additives. The principles governing the practical application of these additives in shotcrete production are not covered by this standard.

The EN 934-6 standard describes methods for sampling and evaluating and verifying invariance of performance for additives covered by the EN 934 series of standards.
