The ASTM D4157-13 standard, developed by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM), defines a test method for determining the abrasion resistance of woven textile fabrics using an oscillating roller tester. However, this test method is not used for some fabric structures. The full name of this standard is: ASTM D4157-13 Standard test method for abrasion resistance of textile fabrics (oscillating roller method).

Other procedures used to measure the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics are in ASTM D3884 and ASTM D4158 standards, and test methods are in ASTM D3885, ASTM D3886 and AATCC 93 standards.
Wyzenbeek abrasion test device is used in these tests. The test method described in the ASTM D4157 standard measures the ability of a textile to withstand abrasion using the oscillating roller method. This testing method is named after Wyzenbeek, the inventor of the testing machine. Abrasion resistance testing is one of several components used when evaluating the durability and potential life of a textile for upholstery use.
The scope of testing includes shearing test specimens from both the warp and weft directions and pulling them tightly in a frame. The guiding fabric is rubbed back and forth as an abrasive on the samples while the samples are held stationary. Wire mesh abrasive is recommended for olefins and low melting point fibers. Each back and forth movement is considered a double rub, serving as the unit of measurement used to report test results. The procedure requires samples to be checked and evaluated for damage every 5 double rubbing. These tests are concluded in one of three ways: when two thread breaks occur, when visible wear occurs, or when 100 thousand pairs of friction is reached. If no damage is detected within the 100 double rub range, samples can be tested for a higher result.
The Wyzenbeek tester is widely accepted for determining the abrasion resistance of textiles, fabrics, vinyl, leather and other materials.
Our organization also provides Wyzenbeek wear resistance testing services within the scope of ASTM D4157 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
