EN 10213 Steel Castings for Pressure Purposes

EN 10213 Steel Castings for Pressure Purposes

A European standard, “EN 10213 Steel castings for pressure purposes”, applies to steel castings for pressure-containing parts. This standard covers the materials used in the manufacture of pressure equipment components.

EN 10213 Steel Castings for Pressure Purposes

This European standard concerns castings characterised by their chemical composition and mechanical properties. This standard applies where castings are welded by the founder.

In cases where castings are welded by two forgings (sheets, pipes, forgings) or by non-constructors, this standard does not apply.

For this harmonized supporting standard for materials, the assumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the pressure equipment directive is limited to the technical data of the material in the standard and does not assume the adequacy of the material for the specific equipment. Consequently, the technical data specified in the material standard must be evaluated against the design requirements of the specific equipment to verify that the essential requirements of the pressure equipment directive are met.

The EN 10213 standard for steel castings for pressure purposes is specifically for companies producing steel castings and pressure device manufacturers.

Cast steel is a ferrous alloy with a maximum carbon content of approximately 0,75 percent. Steel castings are solid metal objects produced by filling a cavity in a mold with liquid steel. Many of the same carbon and alloy steels that can be produced as wrought metal are available. The EN 10213 standard provides guidance to manufacturers and companies on the production process, welding processes, casting, corrosion behavior, materials and inspection methods.

The EN 10213 standard exemplifies the necessary chemical composition and mechanical properties that help achieve precision in terms of product functionality and specification. This standard includes all requirements for steel casting. Adherence and compliance with the EN 10213 standard allows the efficient production of high-quality steel castings for pressure-containing parts.

Steel casting is a metal component created by pouring molten steel into a mold cavity. The liquefied steel then cools and solidifies within the mold cavity. The shape of the mold, and therefore the casting, can be adjusted to perfectly match specifications. Steel is less fluid than other metals and is more reactive to mold materials. Some specific industries that use this type of casting include the railroad, construction, drilling, transportation, and mining industries. Major applications include steel casting gears, valve bodies, pump housings, mining machinery, marine equipment, engine cylinder blockers, forging presses, and railway vehicles. Due to its reliability and strength, many industries rely on steel castings. Industries using steel castings range from food processing and electronics to oil and gas.

In addition to the standard “EN 1559-2 Formwork - Technical delivery conditions - Part 2: Additional requirements for steel castings”, cast steels are identified according to the standards “EN 10027-1 Identification systems for steels - Steel names” and “Identification systems for steels - Part 2: Numerical system” as follows:

  • Minimum yield strength (tensile test) for non-alloyed steels (preceded by the letter P for compression uses)
  • According to chemical composition for alloy steels

For grades with different mechanical properties depending on the heat treatment conditions, the buyer specifies the heat treatment symbol.

The melting procedure in the production process is in addition to the EN 1559-2 standard, alternative processes are left to the discretion of the manufacturer. The heat treatment must be in accordance with the table given in the standard, unless otherwise agreed.

In general, unless otherwise agreed, all welds are permitted provided that they comply with the same non-destructive testing criteria as the relevant part of the casting. A welding procedure qualification is required according to EN ISO 11970. The preheat, interpass and post-weld heat treatment conditions for the welding operations are included in the annex of the standard (Annex A). These conditions are informative for ferritic and martensitic grades and normative for austenitic and austenitic-ferritic grades. A heat treatment procedure is mandatory to qualify the welding procedure for austenitic and austenitic-ferritic steels.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the "EN 10213 Steel Castings for Pressure Purposes" standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
