The standard “ANSI/AWWA C301 Prestressed concrete pressure pipe, steel cylinder type”, jointly published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA), describes the requirements for the production of steel cylinder and wire-reinforced circumferential prestressed concrete pressure pipe in sizes 410 mm to 3.660 mm. Larger sizes have been produced based on the concepts presented in this standard.

This standard describes two types of prestressed pipes:
The design of prestressed concrete pipe is not presented in this standard, it falls within the scope of the “ANSI/AWWA C304 Design of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe” standard. On the other hand, the ANSI/AWWA C301 standard does not include requirements for pipe handling, delivery, installation, field testing or disinfection. In this regard, the “AWWA Guide M9 Concrete pressure pipe” guide applies.
According to this standard, the pipe must have the following basic properties:
Lined cylinder tubing can be used for pipe sizes up to 510 mm and pipe sizes up to 1.520 mm. Embedded cylinder tubing can be used for pipe sizes from 610 mm to 1.520 mm and for larger pipes. In embedded cylinder tubing, at least one third of the total core thickness should be outside the cylinder.
The purpose of this standard is to provide minimum requirements for prestressed concrete pressure pipes with steel cylinders.
This standard may be referenced in purchasing and receiving specifications for prestressed concrete pressure pipe, steel cylinder type and may be used as a guide for the manufacture of this type of concrete pressure pipe. The provisions of this standard apply only to prestressed concrete pressure pipe, steel cylinder type when and where this standard is referenced.
Material selection is critical where water service and distribution pipes are likely to be exposed to significant concentrations of contaminants, such as low molecular weight petroleum products or organic solvents or their vapors. Studies have documented that pipe materials such as polyethylene, polybutylene, polyvinyl chloride, and asbestos cement, and elastomers used in gaskets and packing seals, are subject to permeation by low molecular weight organic solvents or petroleum products. If a water pipe must pass through such a contaminated area or an area exposed to contamination, the manufacturer should be consulted regarding the permeability of the pipe walls, joint materials, and similar materials before selecting a material for use in that area.
All materials provided by the manufacturer must be new and of the required quality. In addition, the materials must comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and other legal regulations.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “ANSI/AWWA C301 Prestressed concrete pressure pipe, steel cylinder type” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
