ASTM D3527-18 Standard Test Method for Life Performance of Automotive Wheel Bearing Grease

ASTM D3527-18 Standard Test Method for Life Performance of Automotive Wheel Bearing Grease

Developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM D3527-18 standard describes a test method for evaluating the high temperature life performance of wheel bearing greases when tested under prescribed conditions. The changes introduced in the last revision have increased the severity of the test.

This test method distinguishes between wheel bearing greases with markedly different high temperature properties. It is not equivalent to extended service tests and is not intended to distinguish between products with similar high temperature performance characteristics.

This test method has proven helpful in screening greases for life performance for automotive wheel bearing applications.

When a car is not used for a while, condensation forms on the wheel bearings and rust builds up. Even a daily used vehicle requires periodic wheel bearing maintenance to keep its wheels turning smoothly. Wheel bearing grease is designed for high temperatures to prevent heat degradation. Having the proper amount of grease in the bearings reduces friction and heat in the hubs. It also helps prevent bearings from rusting by providing a moisture barrier. Regularly applying bearing grease prevents wheel bearings from jamming and costly repairs.

Greasing bearings helps reduce friction in the wheels and allows them to rotate smoothly. Bearings carry the weight of the vehicle and withstand high pressure and strong forces at high speeds, ensuring trouble-free operation. Bearings play a vital role in facilitating wheel rotation. Therefore, their structural integrity is crucial for safety and is stabilized with grease or lubricants.

Grease reduces friction between bearings and adjacent components such as axle and shaft. Heat from friction causes wheel bearing failure. Friction is the primary cause of failure of seals, balls or raceways.

Grease lasts longer than thin lubricating oils when added to moving metal parts. Most greases can also withstand prolonged exposure to the elements without thinning, freezing, or washing.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the life performance of automotive wheel bearing grease within the scope of ASTM D3527-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
