TS 4317 Determination of Drying, Hardening or Film Forming Properties of Organic Coating Materials at Room Temperature (ISO 9117-1)

In the standard “TS 4317 Determination of drying, hardening or film formation properties of organic coating materials at room temperature” published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), a procedure is described for determining the film formation speeds and properties of organic coating materials at different stages during drying or hardening stages at normal room temperature.

TS 4317 Determination of Drying, Hardening or Film Forming Properties of Organic Coating Materials at Room Temperature (ISO 9117-1)

This standard was later replaced by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard "ISO 9117-1 Paints and varnishes - Drying tests - Part 1: Determination of completely dry state and completely dry time". This standard specifies a test method for determining whether a single or multiple coat paint, varnish or related material system has reached a completely dry state after a specified drying time under standard conditions. This test method is also used to determine the time required to reach this state.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • IRHD scale refers to the international rubber hardness degree scale.
  • The completely dry condition refers to the condition in which a film is dry throughout its thickness. The completely dry condition should not be confused with the condition in which the surface of the film is dry but the majority of the coating is still mobile. A single coating or multiple-coat system of paint or varnish or related material is considered completely dry if a specified gauze does not damage the film under specified pressure, torsion and time.
  • Complete drying time refers to the time interval between the application of a coat to a prepared test panel and the attainment of a complete drying condition, as determined by the specified test procedure.

In testing, a layer of paint or varnish of a specified thickness is applied to a substrate and allowed to dry under specified conditions. The completeness of drying of the coating is determined by applying a load to a specified area of the surface and then rotating the face applying the load through 90 degrees and then examining the surface of the coating.

These tests use the following equipment along with ordinary laboratory apparatus and glassware:

  • Base plate and piston assembly consisting essentially of a base plate and a free-floating piston. The piston head shall be at least 25 mm in diameter. It shall be designed so that the underside of the head can be aligned with the top surface of the test panel. If the mass of the piston is not greater than 250 g, the apparatus described in ISO 4622 is suitable for the test. A rubber disc shall be fitted to the centre of the underside of the piston head using tape coated with adhesive on both sides. There shall be a device for holding a gauze firmly to the test surface and the piston head shall be capable of being rotated through 90 degrees. It is recommended to use the piston specified in ISO 4622 for reasons of economy and the presence of a ball joint connection between the piston and head.
  • Flat rubber disc with a diameter of 22 mm plus/minus plus/minus 1 mm, a thickness of 5 mm plus/minus 0,5 mm and a hardness of 50 IRHD plus/minus 5 IRHD. For economic reasons, it is recommended to use the rubber disc specified in the ISO 3678 standard.
  • Gauze made of woven monofilament polyamide (minimum size 100 mm × 100 mm). The diameter of the gauze thread should be 0,120 mm and the gauze aperture should be about 0,2 mm.
  • Weights giving a total mass of 1500 plus/minus 10 g.
  • A stopwatch with accuracy of up to 0,1 seconds.

Samples are taken from a representative sample of the product to be tested or, in the case of a multi-layer system, from each product, as described in ISO 15528. Each sample is examined and prepared for testing, as described in ISO 1513.

Three test panels of a type described in ISO 1514 are selected as the substrate, or six test panels if both complete drying status and complete drying time are to be determined. If possible, the substrate should be equivalent to the intended application.

Test panels are prepared in accordance with ISO 1514 and then coated with the product or system being tested using the specified method to the specified dry film thickness. The coating method and dry film thickness shall be as specified by the manufacturer or agreed upon between the parties concerned and shall be included in the test report.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the standard “TS 4317 Determination of drying, hardening or film formation properties of organic coating materials at room temperature (ISO 9117-1)”.
