ASTM D570-98e1 Standard Test Method for Water Absorption of Plastics

ASTM D570-98e1 Standard Test Method for Water Absorption of Plastics

The ASTM D570-98e1 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes a test method for determining the relative rate of absorption of water by plastics when immersed in water. This test method is intended to be applied to the testing of all types of plastics, including cast, hot-molded and cold-molded resin products, and homogeneous and laminated plastics in rod and tubular form, and sheets with a thickness of 0.13 mm or more.

The said standard is considered technically equivalent to the ISO 62 standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) (ISO 62 Plastics - Water absorption determination standard).

Plastics exposed to water show several different effects:

  • Dimensional changes due to absorption of water (eg swelling)
  • Extraction of water-soluble components
  • Changes in other features

However, exposure to moisture, immersion, and exposure to boiling water cause markedly different material responses. Equilibrium moisture content is used to compare the amount of water absorbed by different types of plastics when exposed to moisture. The moisture content determined under non-equilibrium conditions is used to compare different lots of the same material and to determine the diffusion constant of the material when determined under controlled non-equilibrium moisture exposure conditions and when plastic samples of defined sizes are used.

The ISO 62 standard also describes a test method for determining the through-thickness moisture absorption properties of flat or curved shaped solid plastics. This international standard is also for the determination of the amount of water absorbed by plastic samples of defined sizes when immersed in water or exposed to moist air under controlled conditions.

The ASTM D570-98e1 standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of employees implementing this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization also provides standard testing services for water absorption of plastics within the scope of ASTM D570-98e1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
